I want at LEAST showroom shine. so there lies my predicament. I'm in daytona beach so if anyone has any suggestions on where to go, please let me know.

Dude all I have to say is take your time picking a shop. Most paint shops are like used car dealers. Call and talk around, look at there work, check them out in the BBB. Good luck

What i know people here do body work.....or at least they talk smack like they've done it before. so no one can give me some tell tale signs of a good or bad shop.

There is a saying "Your work speaks for it's self" Check into the BBB and you don't see anything bad there you just got to see there shop, and see the car that they have produced. It's the only way to tell. If you get ANY bad fealings about the shop or the people running it then leave and never look back. Also talk to the people who will be working on your ride, make sure they are all with it (know what I mean?)

Ususally the better the shop the more money you will spend. Larger shops try to do volume. You may get a good job, but it depends on the amount of insurance claims they have at the time.
You need to set a budget, but be realistic. If you only have $1000.00 you will have to settle for a Maaco or 1-day paint job. If money or time is not an object find a place that specializes in custom jobs and leave them the car for a month.
Another resource is the paint supply stores. Most of the guys that work there are painters and know just about all of the other painters. They can often turn you on to a person who can do excellent work for a good price.

like schexy1 said, you get what you payfor, Just look for people in your area with cars that you know are no the stock color and that suit your tastes. Ask them who painted there car and what it cost them, and ask how the service was.

TO save some money try to have as much of the body work that you can do, done before you go, if you do all the sanding, and remove all the mouldings so all they have to do is clean and spray the car then you should save alot.

I don't talk samk i just say what i know to be true from my schooling in florida to the school her in Tn. and from my experiences.

hope this helps.

Chris

I appreciate the help guys. I've only seen one Maaco paint job that i thought to be decent. and have only heard stories about Earl Scheib. I guess i can look around. Some local painter offered to do it for $700 if i help prep and clean and all that other fun stuff. what do you guys think?

$700 is a decent price for a jobber (independent painter with out a shop) depending on the type of paint. The last car I painted cost $800 in materials alone (middle of the line PPG). I would have to see some of his work and know where he was planning on spraying the car (outdoors, garage or paintbooth). If you are serious about a good paint job plan on spending at least $2000.00

If you go to a Maaco, just rememebr they are independently owned. There are a few that do good work. Just ask to see some cars that were done there.
