Smile Whoever said pulling an engine was hard...

So, since the front rotor of my car is toast and the ATF trick didn't help it any I decided to start pulling my engine while saving up for a new engine (having no job kinda hurts that though.. ). Well, I pulled the entire front end out; radiator, battery, oil cooler, intake, shroud, hood, fan and hoses out yesterday. Not a single skinned knuckle or stains on my jeans. Today I started tackling the power-steering pump, AC, IC, fuel lines, and various other connections. My only problems are that I need a wrench for one of the power-steering hook-ups and I can't figure out how to disconnect the controller harness.

While I haven't gotten into the "meat" of the pull, it's not really that hard and certainly better than spending $800-1000 for an shop to do it.

I'm just in a good mood.

Keep up the good work and keep me up to date.
I'm thinking of pulling my engine out on my own too to save myself $1000 bucks.

Pulling the engine is much easier when you have the engine hoist and an enclosed garage not to mention all the basic tools handy. I'm going to do my engine swap(again) this weekend starting Saturday morning and should be finished reinstalling Sunday afternoon. Having done it a few time makes it go much faster. You shouldn't have any problems just be careful.

You know, you should wait till you get the Jspec before you yank the engine out. Its guaranteed you'll forget how some things go back together when it sits for a couple months with no engine....

It isn't that hard. The hard part is keeping track of everything and reinstalling correctly.

Not sure if your striping the engine bay. But you do not need to disconnect the p/s or the ac. You simply unbolt them from the mounts and tie them out of the way.

you all suck, I saw video of Mr. Amemiya (or one of the other rx7 mechanics, I'll watch it again, but I'm pretty sure it was him) pulling the engine from an FC in 26 minutes!

Its not hard if you have the right tools

Instead of using an engine hoist to pull engine out I used a steel weigh lilfting bar and chain and two strong men............not a chance bar bent like crazy. U need a hoist.

Once you get the motor out. Then the flywheel nut......well I don't think I need to explain. Then theres the eccentric shaft nut....again......

Does anybody have any tips for the eccentric shaft nut? Thats the nut that is on the crank pulley.

I had to replace my eccentric shaft seal a few months back, so I had to remove that pain in the butt bolt. After trying all kinds of stuff, I finally broke down and picked up a Vice Grip chain clamp. Once I locked that chain clamp arount eccentric shaft pully boss, I had more than enough of a hold to get the eccentric shaft lock 'bolt' loose.

The only place I found around here that carried the chain clamp was Ace Hardware, of all places.

Good luck,
Salguod

I remember seeing some guys pull one in less than an hour at a hobby shop on base. They did this to change out the turbo. It's fins were shot. It had everything on is as far as accessories. This was years before I was into rotaries. I really didn't take too many mental notes on it but it did surprise me all the same. I was working on pulling my engine out of the Toyota I had at the time all by my lonesome. Now that was a PITA.

Sit the engine up on its flywheel and use an impact.

Mechanics tip:
1. Dont disconnect any Power steering or ac lines. simply disconnect the pumps from the brackets and swing them out of the way, much quicker, much easier.

Im taking out my engine and putting it into another car tomorrow. I hope it doesnt take that long since its the first time I do a swap. The engine is sitting in the car right now just waiting to be taken out. I already took off things like the radiator and other crap that gets in the way. Wish me luck!

Unplug the passenger side wiring harness from inside the car and pull it out through the fire wall. It saves a LOT of work that way. You don't have to rip the intake off to unplug the injectors...

thats exactly what I did The only thing Im worried about is unbolting the tranny from the engine. My friend tells me theres two nuts ontop of the tranny. According to him its probably going to be very fun taking them off because with the intake manifold still on the block, the workspace is very tight. Any1 know about this?? Any tips on doing it faster/easier?? thanks

There is only one nut, on the upper passenger side. It threads ona ''locator'' bolt that runs through the engine hoist hook. None of the bolts are hard to get to from underneath. There is a hidden bolt under the starter too. I think its 7 total. I pulled mt TII trans out twice in the same week, and put my FB's engine and trans back in the same week as well, its still somewhat fresh in my mind
