The only time I've seen the actual metering oil pump fail in a pre '89 application is when the pump casing physically broke. Aside from that and the leaks you can get from dried out o-rings, the pump itself doesn't fail.

The '89+ pump fails when one of the electrical components dies (stepper or encoder). In that case, the car will throw a code and go into limp mode.

When people talk about metering pump failure, they generally mean that the lines will break or the injectors will clog. The lines are available at any Mazda dealer, or you can make your own very cheaply (see Archives for rebuilding metering oil lines). As for the injectors I've never run across a set that couldn't be cleaned by a little carb cleaner, brake cleaner and compressed air.

The Factory Service Manual (see FAQ) has testing procedures for the whole system.

ok, i have an 88t2 but still have the stock omp working fine. im pretty sure it will be seeing more on the redline after it is all the way broken in. is it ok if i run 1/2 oz per gallon cause i have the stock omp or is this going to be too much oil?
