white face
white face
I came acroos a page that talked about scanning factory gauges iand printing on glossy photo paper to amke your own white faces. I have an extra cluster laying around and now I am thinking about messing around with the idea. Let me know if you have any experience or know the site for do-it-yourselfers.

Doesn't light shine from behind our gauges to light up the clear sections (numbers, gradient markers, etc.) visable at night? How do you plan on doing that with the paper replacements? I don't know if this interests you or not but the latest issue of either Porsche Panorama or Excellence has an article where they removed the stock gauge set, sent them to a shop that copied them and then printed them on proper gauge material. They even installed them and sent them back. You could also specify the color and script you wanted the writing in. Coincidentally, they made white gauge faces with blue writing for a 944 Turbo.
the guages are front and back lit..
you'll still be able to see the guages when the lights are on at night.. they will just end up haveing a yellow light shineing on them.. unless of course you decide to change out the bulbs too ..
Graham: I'll make you a set of guages in blue for next sunday.. it will only take about 30 mins to install them..

The only problem I *HAVE SEEN* with these custom stick on gauge faces is the fact they are STICK ON!! Now anyone knows that if you have your windows up in the dead of summer, the temps get to 140 or so degrees. In 2 hours you can bake cookies on your dash.
Sooo, pick a good adhesive. Many will come loose and it looks like paper stuck behind your needles. I "almost" bought a car that "had" white face gauges, but the paper was all warped and it looked like ****. Not only that, but the odo said 67K and the dude had a reciept from jiffy lube reading 162K. I don't think they could really F* up a 1 and a 0. But the guy said they must have. Now I know SOME of the people that work at JL are nice, but everyone of them I have met are idiots. Enough of that rant.
Has ANYONE made a painted gauge face? My guess is it wouldn't be that hard making a template, then apply whatever colors you want after you template spray your original/junkyard gauge faces. Anyone think a template would be a good idea? I'll hit up a junkyard and pick up a cluster, and get one of my artsy friends to help me out.
But if no one says anything, i'll just forget about it

Well, if YOU ARE going to do something about the gauge faces, I'm IN !!!!. If you ever get around to scanning, please please PLEASE send them by e-mail over here too...
On the "white paper" subject, if you are serious about this, then you should buy the really expensive shiny white glossy-but-kinda-matt paper from HP (not the plain gloss paper), which when used in a really good color inkjet (with "oven") or, even better, a color laser
, produces absolutely fantastic results (way better than the stock or the aftermarket products). Only problem is that the paper costs way too much (something around 20-25$ A PAGE
), but like I said, if you want results....

Thanks Chris, that will be my project for this weekend.
Eric I have some crazy geological plotters and printers here at work, they could probaly do an amazing job of printing some gauges.
Anybody know what type of bulbs are back there, so I can buy some replacements for the yellow ones.

I got the scans, but they are very compressed. You might want to re-scan them around 5MB and then upload them to filegenie.com and pass along the account & password for us to download.
I"ll post the ones sent tonight.
