Whirring, Buzzing Sound from Gauge Cluster

I've got this wierd buzzing, whining, whirring shoung coming from behing my speedo/tac. It isnt like the redline buzzer, it is more mechanical sounding and gets louder and faster as my RPMs increase. It seems to only do it sometimes, usually for a while until my engine is fully warm and then it goes away.

What is causing this sound?

Speedo cable?
It is about the only mechanically moving part in that area after all.

It's a fairly common problem with the mazda speedos. My 1st Gen did it, my FC does it, my brothers FC does it. Best thing is to replace the cable, although with my first gen, I was able to fix it by reseating the speedo cable behind the gauge.

I haven't bothered to sort the FC yet.

has it been really cold where you live? Mine does it sometimes when it gets extra chilly.

Yes it has. So cold I can't even start the car sometimes. Now we're getting hammered with over a foot of snow. Ugh.

Any tips on how to fix it? Is it easy? Cheap? I like cheap, I can invest some time for my own if it will defray some costs.

Take out the Cluster and Get at the Speedo cable..Spray some silicone based Lubricant Onto the cable..wait..Let it penetrate down through, and repeat..That should Fix it up...THE DOG Thing?..although Funny it will make the Car "run Like ****"!..haha!,So Not recommended!

Will a cat work. I only have a pet fish but my housemate has a cat in need of some serious speedo realignment surgery. har har

No, really though, thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try.

Is there anything I should be careful of, besides cracking the cluster surround? I don't want to end up damaging my speedo.

Mine used to make the noise and the speed would bounce around.. Then one day it stopped. I think it's where the provious owner never drove the car.
