Question Where should I look to find a tranny for my s4 n/a?

The title kinda says it all.

My transmission is usable to get me around town for now, but the syncros are shot, the gears grind, etc. etc. etc. So I want a new one. I have a rebuilt engine with 5k on it, so I want to do this right.

Can I get a new transmission from a Mazda dealership? How much would that cost me?

Is there a reliable way to pick out a used transmission? I know they're dirt cheap (like $100, I hear), but I don't want to spend $500 installing a $100 transmission, only to find out it's as bad as the one I have now.

Long story short, I don't want to throw money away on something that's not sure to last me a good long while.

What do you suggest?

I say take yours out yourself (it's not too hard) and bring it to a local reputable transmission rebuilder with warranty and have it rebuilt, any out of spec parts replaced and so forth.

You should give the Mazda dealer a call if need be.

Anyways, good luck.

I took it to a local shop, and they said that parts are no longer made for it, and that my only option was to buy a whole new tranny or find a used one. I don't know whether this is true, or if they just lack the sources for parts.

Take it to someone else, I havn't had mine rebuilt but it's usually what people recoomend. With this forum being so active and always saying that I highly doubt the parts are no longer available. For the buying a used tranny, goto the for sale section the people here are very helpful and extreamly fast to respond if they have something.

The parts are very widely available to rebuid yours. They just did not want to do it. There are plenty of trans shops that will rebuild yours.

Spend a few dollars on tools and remove the tranny yourself. You will save a ton of money.

Your in cbus huh? All kinds of junkyards with PLENTY of rx7's off mckinley ave. I used to pull parts almost every weekend when i live there. Woodys is prolly the cheapest for a trans. Non turbos are EASY to find in jy... If you dont want to pull it yourself go to All Foreign on Mckinley, they probably have it pulled.
