Where is the OIL coming from??

OK guys, I have an oil leak and cant seem to find it. I have an 8TII with 500 miles on a new rebuild done by myself. I have oil psi of about 30 or so @ idle. The leak is from the back side of the engine. My first thought was the rear main seal. But didnt want to dig that far in yet. But when the clutch started to make noise when the clutch was not engaged, I thought I might have some oil in there. So I have dropped the tranny and have the FW off. Inside of the bell housing is covered with oil buildup, as is the back side of the engine. However, the rear main seal looks total fine as well as being very DRY. I can seem to think of two things, my oil filter pedestal is leaking, but would account for the oil on the opposite side of the back of the engine. Or my engine bolts have loosened and oil is getting out there. Is it possible I will have to retorque them? Can anyone think of anything else I may be overlooking??

Thanks

Jason

Its not the engine bolts. If they loosened up, the rear end plate would pull away from the rear rotor housing and the oil would come out there.

Sure it's not transmission fluid? Your front seal there could be throwing fluid. Just a thought.

If it isn't that, it's your rear main seal. Did you use a new one on rebuild? If so, did you lubricate both inner and outer sides?

The thing is though, the rear main seal does not have any oil on it at all. Everyting around it does. And also the flywheel does not have any oil on it either. But the clutch plate does. I honestly dont remeber if I lubed the rear main seal or not, but it is new though. Does this help any?

Again, check your transmission front seal. There really is no other place oil can get to that location other than from the rear engine seal or the front transmission seal. It seems rather unlikely that oil would be dripping from outside of the bell housing into that area. Not impossible I guess but unlikely. Oh... one thought... check your master clutch cylinder... loosing fluid???? If you are the clutch slave cylinder is leaking fluid into the bell housing.

Well, I will check the tranny seal here on thursday. Thats the next time I can get under the car. It just seems that the residue that is on the skid plate under the oil pan is oil and not that stinky tranny fluid. But I will look at none the less, Thanks 1adzam.
