Where to mount Autometer water temp sender

I am debating where i should mount this 1/8 NPT sensor. I dont really know the best place.

The easiest place would be the upper water pump housing. The alluminum piping just above the thermostat... Thermostat will have to open before accurate reading though. This may be a "slow" place to mount the sender, but again very easy.

I have also read of people screwing them to the stock guage sendor's location (just under oil filter). The problem becomes what series cars have this (I have 87 t2) and the thread is actually not the right size, but close. It is a 1/8 BSP fitting (supposedly). Should I tap this to 1/8 NPT? The down side is stock guage will no longer work but I dont care, and also I will be taping directly into a side housing.

Next place is inline with any water hoses. PPPPPPFTFFFFTTT.. I really dont want that.

So where is the best place to install this water temp guage sendr??

thats where mine is (in the picture)

i get very accurate, responsive readings from there. dont mount it after the thermo...if the thermo fails you won't know it till you're fucked.

I debated this exact same question. I tried retrieving the thread but the search function Is not all that good.

I ended up tapping Into the Thermostat Housing. Don't remove the stock Temp Sender Unit. Use It In conjuction with the Autometer one. If I could back, I would have tapped Into the back of the Water Pump Housing.

There, you'll receive your engines true temps.

You do realize that the Kouki owners have PLASTIC thermostat housings that make it near to impossible to do this.

My dilemma exactly. Who has a better idea? and I don't want to take the water pump housing off just to tap it and install a friggin sender. There must be a better way to do this for us S5 guys.

One option that I though of was to remove the drain plug in the block (driver's side engine mount) and mount the sender in it's place.

Cons: Have to have some sort of adapter - I'm sure it could be done. And this is where the water exits the rad, and goes into the block. Theretically this is the coolest that the water will be, which isn't what you really want to know.

I also thought about making a "y" fitting that screws into the stock location, and then you can screw in the stock sender and the aftermarket one. Doesn't the ECU need a signal from the stock sender?

Here is a thread that deals with this. In the thread there are two more links to other threads, so get your reading glasses on!

I thought the ecu was in need of the stock reading as well. I have been debating the exact same thing for about 2 months. I have my gauges all installed in my car, but the wires going to the sending units are ziptied off to the side waiting for me to install them the "right" way.

I think I am going to go with tapping the waterpump housing.

I'm in the exact same situation. Everything is ready to go - just have to mount the sender!

you do not have to remove the water pump housing to tap it. just remove the thermostat housing, stuff something in there to prevent shavings from falling in. remove the fan shroud, and you should be able to drill it. thats what i did.
