Where does one mount a CB antenna?

First: I'm aware that RX-7s are not generally considered "CB vehicles." However, a CB is a really good way to find out where police are while doing high speed highway runs.

A magnetic antenna is nice, but I'm not opposed to mounting one somewhere permanently (or at least screw mounts for it).

Does anyone have good places they use for antennas? I can only think of either on the sunroof or behind it, but there's not a good way to run a cable to it if it's on the sunroof, and behind the sunroof means the sunroof can't open.

"high speed highway runs"

Forewarning, if I was in any other mood I'd start this flame thread off. Don't street race (Granted, a highway is not a surface street...)-- but if you're still close enough to the city to be worried about cops, you're still an idiot.

Meh true. I'd just get a glass mount "nub" style, or glass mount one thats 5-6" high. Something thats inconspicious like that. Mount the glassmoutn antenna to the angled hatch. Thats where I had my cell antenna at.

I'm not an idiot, I'm a bus driver. I don't street race. However, I do a lot of highway driving in the middle of nowhere. Contrary to popular belief, cops *do* sit in the middle of highways late at night in the middle of nowhere. On I-80 in Iowa at 3 AM, when I'm the only car for miles, I don't think 85-90mph is excessive. However, I have received a ticket for 82 in a 65 at 3:30 AM before. I've also been alerted to the presence of police by my CB (in a different car) late at night by truckers.

Its kinda ironic though, because as far as I know, CB chanels are usually scanned by emergency services. Having some punks on there talking about where they and the cops are seems pretty "iffy" doesn't it?

BTW: The last time I ran a wideband FM scanner, I got pulled over and heard my plates beign called over the radio. -- Fun stuff. Its a good thing I turned it off before the cop came to the window though, or I woulda got busted with it.

Doesn't matter now though that I got my HAM license Even though I can run the radios/scanners legaly now, I still don't.

I've tried using CBs driving from CO to St. Louis, and I rarely hear anything on it.. I took one for the same reason.

Thats different then. My appologies, It hought by "fast highway runs" you meant racing. To be quite honest, I roll I-90 at around 100-110 when late at night when im running east river (400ish miles). So I can't blame you. SD cops don't sit in the middle of nowhere though, they sit in bars, lol (not really, but you never see HP out in the middle of the night around here).

In that case, I would suggset the glass mount I was talking abuot earlier. I guess its different elsewhere when it comes to speed enforcement. Its pretty lax when you're in the middle of nowhere around here.

i used a CB once on a cross country trip with another car and it worked fine with the antenna in the back window of my Civic. Bet it'd work alright in sitting in the hatch...

CB channel 19 is where the "road info" usually is. On main trucking highways (I-80 & such), it's usually good information.

I just had a thought for mounting a taller antenna. Why not make a bracket that'll bolt to the rear tow hook attachment, extends beyond the rear bumper and use a trucker-type antenna.

You could make the bracket to allow it to be removed without tools so you don't attract cops or when you don't need the CB.

I don't think you'll need (or want) a whipping antenna for your car. I thought most repeater antennas that are nub size did a decent job now anyway-- that technology finaly caught up and is maxing out CB frequencies...

Hooking something to the tow hook isn't a bad idea. I was under the impression that most CB antennas needed a ground plane for optimal functioning though.

My power antenna was broken.
The Windshield antenna does well for the stereo.
So I mounted the CB whip in the rear power antenna position.
The signal pattern is somewhat asymetrical, but with a 150 watt linear, who cares.
Radio shack has a 1/4 wave base load that tunes very well.

The guys say my car looks like a 1:1 scale RC car..

Beautiful. I like the 1:1 RC car look. That just might work...

Could you elaborate on your windshield antenna for radio? I honestly don't listen to the radio much, but I use a FM transmitter to get from my iPod to the radio, and I do like to surf radio stations on occasion.

There are two stereo antenna plugs.
The male plug (body side) goes to the rear.
The female plug goes to the windshield antenna.
Most radios have a female plug, so you need male to male adapter or a 1/8" x 3" pin to connect them.

I was looking around for a way to elimanate the power antenna on my vert as it now has a wing that covers the stock hole. I came across this thread that might help you.

The impedance matching box for the stereo antenna is OK up to the 5 watt output of a barefoot transmitter, but it will not handle the load of a 150 watt linear.
