Question When Building a Custom Exhaust...

What kind of mufflers would you guys suggest I use?? I've been wanting to get a cat back system for my 86 N/A, but I can't really find one that's in my price range that seems like a decent quality one. I have a Mindtrain header and presilencer.

Also, when making your own custom exhaust, would you guys suggest keeping the dual setup or just making a single??

Thanks,
Jeff

I went for a single exhaust and bought an "Invidia" (knock off RSR) exhaust. I like the size if the exhaust since it's not too big and not too small. Plus the whole turbo back piping only cost me 80 bucks. The muffler was $120 so that's $200 total, installed. I liked how it sounded too.

Turn the brightness all the way up on your monitor to see the detail:

Missing the 7.

Hey AE, I have been looking for mufflers just like that. I love that fit too. Want to go with my true-dual too. Damn that looks sweet. I gotta have dual though. Where did you buy them from? Anywhere online? Thanks.

Hey, well the one I have is just a cheap knock-off RSR exhaust. You can find them on nopionline.com under universal performance>mufflers with tips. Look at the no-name brands and you should find ones that look like mine. They're like $80 a can. The chrome on the muffler becomes a little tarnished from the rotary exhaust heat, but I've seen Apex N1's that got pretty dull so I don't think that's avoidable.

I'm running two Supertrapp's on my car. Sorry I don't have a picture. Personally I like the way it sounds. You can control the volume somewhat buy adding or removing disc. The less number of disc you have the quiter it is but it is also more constrictive. The more disc installed the more it will flow but it gets louder. You can take the disc all the way off and it gets real loud. I repacked the inserts with stainless steel wool. The original packing only lasted a year. You can find the Supertrapp Mufflers in Summit Racing catalog and probably on their website also.

For most of exhausts that i build, people tend to choose such mufflers like the N1, Dunk, nicer style mufflers. Some of the kids dont care and just want some type of muffler back there, so we've used dynomax mufflers too, they just look like a muffler, cost nothing and dont muffle a thing. I am going to be using a Borla XR1 on my car when its together, 4"in 4" out

Gimp, are you putting on a true dual exhaust?

Anyways I went with Magnaflow mufflers with custom piping and custom header.

If you go to the Magnaflow site(www.magnaflow.com), go to their products catalogue, and check out their mirror finish mufflers. They have tons of mufflers that fit like the Apex N1s. They're SS mesh packed and only about 120USD. They also have an optional silencer if it gets too loud for you on the way to work.

Looks good and sounds good on my car.

Hope that helps.

So did those cost you $120 or $80 a piece?

I run a Magnum RACE muffler from Dynomax (Ultraflows). They are very quiet and flow like a madman. Run a single 3" mandrel bent and then "Y" into dual 3" mandrel bent pieces to the muffler of your choice.
http://www.a-1performance.com/race_magnum/

Is your car a turbo 13B? If so you want a straight thru design like this unit.

I had a non mandrel bent 3" exhaust made with the 3" muffler version stated above and went mid 11's@115mph. $150 including the muffler. Mandrel bent would've been better... but I'm cheap.

If you want the polished look they have them too.

you can just use anykind of exhuast on a NA but for a turbo i recomend and turbo exhuast. they are made to withstand the heat of the turbo and the rotary. i am running racing beat exhaust with the cats out. it smells and gets you high for free but performance and sounds great. not to loud nor low. but if money is your problem. just get a universal style dunk muffler and get them welded on your 7.
peace

If you have headers you need some decent mufflers... I'd go with HKS personally... pretty damn quiet, I don't know why!!
I have headers, to one Borla XR-1 (stainless) where the cat was, then 2 Edelbrock RPM mufflers (ceramic packed), and 2 hooker resonated tips.
The tips realy make a nice deep tone! Really smooths things out.
It's still a little loud, but a GREAT mellow, deep sound....
It's all straight through.

A word on the borla as a Pre silencer after headers...
There is so much sound volume out of the headers that you can actually hear a LOT of tinny sound THROUGH the body of the muffler.
Wrap fiberglass mat around it- then secure it with a sheet of sheet tin or aluminum. A couple straps hold it together- works well for me!

i went with the magnaflows that look like n1's . they sound great and for $120 bucks you really can't beat the quality . stainless steel mirror finish , stainless steel packed , and its not as heavy as the apexi's n1's . both of my friends had apexi n1's and they sounded like hell . i would pretty much stay away from apexi universal mufflers . i havent heard them on an fc but on the boingers they sound like trash ..not worth the $200 bucks . if you go with magnaflow i think you'll be happy . i have n1 style with 2.5" ID and 4" tips . oh yeah cat-back is 2.5" custom with a 2.5" magnaflow high flow cat and a paceshitter header . i love the way it sounds , its just right .

what do you gusy think of these? http://vstore.nopi.com/universalpart...Style&Level5=#

They are a little over $150 a piece but seem like pretty good quality and the tips aren't sooo much bigger than the inlet. Anyone know any other place I can get mufflers that look like that for cheaper? Thanks.

I realy love the sound of my true duel system. RB header directly into two RB pre-silencers, then into two RB mufflers. All mandrel bent, done by yours truely. Its quite down low, but up top is sounds sooo good. Lots of $$ new, but i had the exaust system parts laying around for a year or so, after i removed it from anouther car. Then i tryed to sell it. and the funny thing is...i could'nt sell a complete RB n/a exaust with high flow cat for $550 to save my life. The guy i bought the system from payed $1300 inlcuding the cat and install. The system was'nt true duel. But low miles, and very clean. O-well...its in good use now. CJ

I never really understood the universal loudness language..."its not too loud"..."its really loud" I mean my stock exhaust sets off car alarms so where would that put it? It does have alot of leaks and holes so thats why it does that but would that be "pretty loud"?

If i drive my car normaly it won't set off car alarms. By normal, i mean 3,500 and shift. Also the timing plays a role in the exuast note. Don't beleive me? Try retarding your ignition a bit. It will get lounder. CJ

Well when I park next to a car with an alarm in an open parking lot it sets off alarms, how loud is that really? I am just wondering right now because I am about to do my true-dual pretty soon here. Guess it doesn't matter because its going to happen no matter how loud, I just might add some presilencers later though. I hate looking at my header sittin here.
