Wheelspin in a 1988 SE
Wheelspin in a 1988 SE
I´ve got a 1988 se. I removed the cat´s and got a straight pipe (sixth porth is wired open). The only other mod is an open airfilter from k&n. The car feels rather fast but not extremely fast. But I can´t get the wheels to spin when I drive off. ( this is a good thing for the tires ofcourse) No mather how much throttle or how fast I release the clutch, it just starts to drive without wheelspin. The only way to get some wheelspin is to get it to 5000rpm and then release the clutch at once, but even then it is rather civil. I´ve got 16" 205 firestone tires. Is this normal or does the engine miss some serious power.
Marco.
PS I´m used to manual transmissions, almost every car I´ve owned was manual. (I´m from europe

Many owners underestimate how much low end torque you loose by wiring open the 6-ports.
If it is practical to get them working, you will really notice the extra pull in daily driving, without having to tach up the engine.

err, he's got a 5spd
It sounds to me like your clutch might be gone...
Easy way to tell: While going 50MPHish in 5th gear, hit the clutch, REV to 7k, hold your foot on the floor while dumping the clutch.
If you've got a good clutch, the engine should get back down to whatever it was at before (2800ishrpm?), if your clutch is beginning to wear out it'll take a second or two, and if your clutch is gone it'll stay at 5-7k. Let off, either way. You'll have your answer.
Low end torque isn't really necessary for wheelspin, as long as you've got the revs way up

err
even with a weak-*** clutch the car would stall... IMO that's not a very good way to test
when my clutch went on my beater, that test would stall the car yet going down the highway if I did more than light light throttle it would slip

If you realy want to spin the tires go to a wide open parking lot put it in first get it moving just a little bit then punch it mine is nearly all the way stock just at the most two custom parts and will still put out tire smoke and leave two black marks it is an N/A to
Your clutch may need to be changed.
I raced a guy once with my NA S4 from a standstill, started with the engine at 3000 RPM, released the clutch quick but didn't dump it and my rear tires were frying in smoke. My car was stock except for a cone filter.
I would look into your fifth and sixth ports too. If they work you will have better gas mileage and more low end torque.
