What's wrong? Overheating?
I ran my car one time against my friend, goin to 7000 RPMs every shift. I then went to leave and it was steamin and runnin hot. The car never ran hot at all. Is sumin wrong or just hot from pushin it?

Right now I am completely stock with an 88 GXL. I just put an entire gallon of water in my car. I think I have a small leak cuz when I changed my oil today there was a small puddle. I am hopin that thats all it is, that I ran it too hard with too little water.

Ya, I know I have a small water leak. When I changed my oil there was a real small puddle under the car. I put over a gallon of water in and now its nice n cool again. Just gunna have to keep checkin & refillin till I get time to find the leak I guess.

Might seem like a dumb question but where exactly is it? Thanks.

Hey, just my 2 cents worth! If your car is running at normal temperature (1/2 way up the guage or less), don't worry, the thermostat is ok imho. The symptom of a stuck closed thermostat is the temperature of the car keeps going up until it overheats when it first warms up. If your car doesn't do that, it's fine. As to where it is, you've got this big black hose coming from the top of the radiator to the top of the engine. Where this hose is clamped to the engine, there is a gizmo (high tech language, it is really just a thingy) held on by a coupla' nuts (it has a radiator cap on it too). Take the nuts off, pull the thingy off (hopefully you have drained the radiator at this point), and voila! There's the thermostat staring back at you! Have Fun!

I had the same problem with my 89 TII. So I went to Autozone and ordered a thermostat with a lower degree on it. That way when I get on it, it tries to cool itself earlier and therefore it doesn't overheat.

Well now that I put water in my car has ran at no higher than a quarter way up the gauge. How do you flush the coolant? Can I just put anti freeze in there with the water now? Is there anything else to put in there thats better that I don't know of? Thanks alot.

Id just get new hoses and thermostat and replace them all that will end that little problem, or at least eliminate them from the equasion.
Also if you havent changed them and you dont know when they were last changed CHANGE them. winter is coming up and they will blow then if they are old. I would recomend flush really good before you change out the hoses.
I usually flush a car per the directions. Then drain and fill it with water and drive it around the nieghborhood (slowly and calmly) for 20-30 min. Then flush it again per instructions. And then drain and refill it with the proper coolant mix. Sounds like over kill but its not.
