What's the purpose of having an air pump on the engine and then removing it ?

The title speaks for itself. I know it has something to do with emissions and **** like that. But what I wanna know is what's does it do as it's job and what will it do to the engine when removed ? Besides polute more.

- Does it increase performance ?
- Does it prolong engine life ?
- Does it smoke more ?

It doesn't really do any of those. Actually, on the s5 it opens the VDI and/or the 5&6 ports(right?) so you might loose some hp. I have an s4 so I took mine off (5&6 ports on vacume, no VDI). Removing it just makes more room. If you take it off you sould get a dual belt alternator pulley or your water pump could slip. Mazdatrix has one for $44, part #11479

it pumps air to the aircontrol valve so the ACV can distribute it the main cat, it helps burn HC's in the CAT at least in turbo modles to clean up emissions he's right about the VDI thing for N/A' s also

It is primarily an emissions device. It delivers fresh air to the cats and exhaust ports to help burn excess hydrocarbons. On an S5 NA, it also opens up the aux ports and VDI.

You can remove it if you do not have catalytic converters and the car is not an S5 NA.

There really isn't much of a gain to removing it besides saving a little space in the engine bay, but if you don't have cats then there is no point in the pump being there...

The air pump on a Turbo and a S4 non turbo helps prevent the rotary backfire in the exhaust manifold on lift throttle situations, as well as feeds the 2nd brick in the main cat for better cat efficency (both in converting and in flow).

The air pump on a S5 non turbo, does the above as well as provides actuation pressure for the aux ports and VDI system, both systems directly effect both low end and high end power. Removing it, will castrate the engine.

Thanks for the info everyone. But if I were to remove the air pump and ACV and vaccum hoses and all. Isn't there something I should do to block the vaccum passages ?

Yes. Search for "emissions removal".

Uhh, please elaborate? The 6PI works off pressure, not vaccum. Vaccum would essentially pull the ports closed more, and prevent them from opening even if they wanted too. Unless u fab'ed something up using a vaccum switch?

And are you sure your ports are even working? Did u use the grease trick?

Not to flame just kind of curious.
