whats a pressure sensor?

what is a pressure sensor? what does it do? and how can i check if mine works. and can that be causing my 2000rpm idle problem. here are some pictures of the sensor

MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor/boost sensor/pressure sensor measures the pressure in the intake manifold relative to absolute vacuum.

If you disconnect the pressure sensor, then your ECU will think that you have a steady air pressure and feeds your engine the wrong amount of fuel and gives it the wrong ignition timing.
