Whats with the different motor "series", and how do you know which one you have?

Whats with the different motor "series", and how do you know which one you have?

I see alot of links that say series 4 motor, or series 5 motor, how do you know which one you have, and whats the difference? Oh if you cant tell, Im new, had my 7 for 2 days. And I f*ckin love the beautiful piece of metal.

well 87-88 series 4. 89+ series 5. as far as differences on the outside its pretty hard to tell. i dont think the series 5 have the rod that comes from the metering oil pump....cant think of anymore at the moment

Series 5 will have the VDI intake system...series 4 will not. Series 4 has a big metal boxy thing on top (Dynamic Chamber), that has ridges going front to back.. It will say "13B Injection" i think on it.. Series 5 looks different, but I can't remember how.

Also..hm...something makes me want to say the throttle body is reversed between the two... but that may just be the turbo/na difference.

Rad cap of series 4 is on the engine (water pump?) which the series 5 is on the rad.

It's right before the thermostat on a Series 4. Up close to the engine.

All 86-88 is series 4, All 89-92 is series 5.

On BOTH of my series 4's, I have *TWO* rad caps.. One on the radiator, and one right next to the thermostat..

Of course, nothing says it's the stock radiator..

The one on the radiator is the radiator cap, the one next to the thermostat is the FILLER cap.
