Well, dude. This is one of those posts that can get you seriously flamed. You see, it's been asked and discussed many times on this forum. You need to learn how to use the search function and you can read everyone's opinion on what oil to use in a rotary.

For the record, Castrol GTX in 10W-30 or 20W-50 is very popular. I use Havoline 10W-30 in winter and 20W-50 in summer and have had very good results. Synthetics, like Mobile 1, are OK as long as you don't use a synthetic blend. They just cost a lot more. In a rotary you're supposed to change oil and filter every 2500 to 3000 miles.

Food for thought... the rotary engine burns oil from the omp.. and ELF fully synthetic engien oil is the ONLY synthetic oil approved by Mazda to be used in the RX8 (none was approved when the RX7 was out).

I use the Elf synthetic oil 10w50 since ELF does not carry a 20w50 weight, however if I was to use conventional oil I would use 20w50 Castrol GTX and since Ca normally wont drop below 50 deg then u should be fine with that year round

personally i loved royal purple. but that got expensive and hard to find in my area. i switched to mobil1 20/50 for the summer and mobil1 10/30 for winter. it all depends on what you like the best.

i suggest doing some searching about the different weights and brands. royal purple has a very good writeup on there website about synthetics and rotary engines.

Yes this is all about preference and IMO I think Royal purple is a gimick oil and I would never use it in anything i own.. again my personal preference.. I have had two buddies with negative reactions with using RP..

1. 98 pontiac formula.. he put the rp in the trans.. 2 months later the 3rd gear went out.. car had 80K

2. buddy with a 85 rx7 put it in the LSD (RP says it has the lsd additive in it already) after putting the fluid in the diff howled.. he hadded a tueb of friction modifier.. no more problems..

to me they just dont seem to have a good streak and I wont use it

My seven is very particular, as I have heard they all can be when it comes to oil, but it does not like synthetics at all, only good ole fashioned mineral oil... 20w 50 or 40 in texas.

Follow your owners manual for the viscosity and ensure the oil has the API starburst and donut. As shown below...

BTW your car is not running on "mineral" oil... That would never work in an engine.. You are using petrolum based stock 2 conventional oil...

Mineral oil is runny and used in Jags and vw for power steering
