what would you do? (getting the car back on the road)

about this time of year, 2 years ago i registered my RX7 as "non-op" and parked it on the side of the house.

its runs fine, just needs a jump start.

when i parked it years ago, it was due for emissions testing, and with its exhaust set up, i knew it wouldnt pass. since it was not my primary car, i just decided to let it sit.
Also at that time, winter was coming and i usually didnt drive it much in winter anyways.

Now i am thinking i want it back on the road.

Before i fire it up i am going to give it a little tune up, change the plugs, change the oil / oil filter, new fuel filter, clean the throttle body, coolant flush, inspect the brakes etc.
(anything else you guys suggest?) i put some fuel stabilizer in before i parked it, and i took it for a few short drives over the years, and gassed it up once. so im not so concerned about the fuel sitting in the tank.

tomorrow i am going to pick up all the exhaust components i need to pass the sniffer.
under the hood will already make visual.

yesterday i ordered new shifter bushings, since the sloppy feeling shifter is the only thing thats not cherry about the car. didnt realize it was that bad, until i felt the difference between it and my G20.

poor car is full of old car parts, and has a layer of dust on it.

like i mentioned tomorrow i pick up the catalytic converters. i'm kinda worried, because they are used, OEM. i hope they'll be good enough to pass smog. i am getting them for a good price ($100, unless i can talk him down to $80) so its worth chancing it. 3 new cats, would be expensive, and money is tight for me right now.

would you guys risk it? i wastold the cats came off a car that had about 150k miles on it, but who knows if thats a lie.

what would you do?

old picture from 2004 (i think)

a n y o n e ?!?!
advice for maintenance on a car thats been parked for a couple years.

i am excited to get working on this, i miss this car!
heres some updated pictures since the one at the top of this thread is at LEAST 5 years old.

here she is, hiding out in her tomb haha....
looking a little dusty on the outside:

under the hood is still clean, and so stock! ready and waiting for visual inspection.

inside is all cherry, for all the time its been sittin' no spider webs or anything. hardly any dust on the dash. of course i did give it a good cleaning before i parked it.

How could you let such a nice 7 sit for so long... I would have been driving it without any plates if that was what it came down to.

I say you start a new business... renting out full exhaust systems to all you poor Cali cats who have to pass emissions... buy the what you need to get the car to pass and then rent it out to all the guys who are polluting our world... should pay for itself within the first 3 rentals.

What brand roll bar?

How difficult was it to install your roll bar? Did you have to cut or drill any panels?

Thanks again! I just bookmarked the web site.

i did the installation about 7 years ago so i dont remember all the details but i do remember it was really easy to install.

i took the seats out, and set it in place.
with a marker i traced the bottom portions where they attach to the car.
moved the bar aside, and then cut the carpet out below where the bar attached following the template i traced.

(for safety reasons you dont want carpet between the bar and the the body of the car.
in a wreck this could make the bolts sheer off.)

then i set the bar in place drilled and attached the backing plates with bolts. (all the hardware is provided.)

theres two points right behind the seats, and two back farther that attach in the wheel well.

i went out and pulled the plugs. i had new ones ready, but the ones in it all looked really good.
so i cleaned them up and put them back in.

the 2 in the rear rotor had a bit more oil on them, and were a little more burnt, and the wire to the leading plug was rusted on the end. somehow it mustve gotten water under the boot, or a mouse took a leak on it or something. Anyways, its damaged, so i cant fire it up yet.

i'm waiting on the wires to get here, (someones dropping them off) then i'll start it, drive it up on some ramps, and do an oil change /coolant flush.

in the meantime i pulled off the strut tower bar and repaired it.
the strut tower bar was previously in another RX7 that i had rolled, and the impact was so bad/good that the engine broke off its mounts and was resting on the strut tower bar when the car stopped upside down.

the bar itself had a bunch of scratches and a couple chunks taken out of it, and the two mouting plates that bolt to the strut towers got bent up, as if the engine had bench pressed the bar.

i had done a quick repair to it before, but it was a half assed job. the plates werent competely straight, and i had done some sanding before deciding to just cover the bar with a braided steel hose cover. never really liked that look tho.

today i used a wire wheel on the bar until it was all smooth and mat finished, then worked on the plates to make them a bit flatter, and finally i painted everything a deep bronze color.

you can see the damage, but i dont care. i'll wear it like a proud battle scar.

right now im going to go clean the MAF and inspect the throttle body. i pulled it all out before i took a break for lunch, and now that break is over!
back to work i go....

Its a test only smog check facility.
www.smogmaster.net

I can go into diag mode and check the numbers out. If it looks good we can go ahead and do the smog check.
