What would cause high oil pressure?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this because this S4 motor is in my 1st gen. Anyways any ideas what would cause 50 psi at idle? I already swapped out the oil sending unit with a known good one and it still the same. The pressure maxes out at 70 psi @ 8000rpm and will not go higher which sounds about right. Any ill effects? I'm guessing this could not be good for oil seals? I have parked the car and not plan on driving it until I get the problem resolved. I'm also waiting for the Atkins thermal pellet to come in hoping it would help.

Thanks, Ed

I'd buy a aftermarket mechanical oil pressue gauge like a SunPro and install it to find out the true oil pressure. It's worth the ten/twenty bucks to know.

Maybe someone installed a racing pressure regulator in the engine? That's about the only thing I can think of. Or a twisted oil line (not probable).

The regulator is stock! When the stock thermal pellet fails does the oil pressure go up or down?

Thanks, Ed

It causes the pressure to drop if it fails. Just the opposite of your problem.

Sounds odd. I also have an S4 engine in my 1st gen.

I would recommend getting an aftermarket gauge so that you can accurately read the pressure. When I first start mine up the pressure is around 75PSI until its warmed up properly. It eventually drops back to about 40 once warm.

Are you using the right grade oil for your climate?

Id grab an aftermarket gauge to be sure.

So its suppose to be that high at start up? I fired it up today after changing the oil filter with a Mazda original. Here are the readings. 60psi with the choke on around 1900rpm. It dropped to 35psi once warmed, cruise speed @ 3000rpm 60 psi. Does this sound about right? It has new 20/50 oil in it.

Thanks, Ed

thats about right with stock. Im using FD ROPR - my oil pressure @ 80 MPH is above 100 PSI.

Sounds right :-)

When you first start up, the oil is rather viscous, until it warms up.

This is how I can tell when I have warmed my car up enough to begin driving. I start it up and hold revs at 1500, and let off the accelerator every minute or so and watch if the oil pressure drops. if it doesnt, i bring the revs back up for another minute, then try again. Once the oil pressure starts to drop after letting off the gas, i know the oil has at least had a chance to warm up, and the water too... then i drive under 4000rpm for the next 10 mins... after that i might take it higher and higher as time goes on :P
