Unhappy What is this Wire???????

Whats up everyone, happy to join the board.

I have an 87 NA and I did somthing horrible to it!! I was fixing the pulsation damper and I had taken off the alternater. When I put everything back on, instead of hooking up the right wires to the alt. I connected the green wire with a black stripe that goes directly into the wire harness. When I tried to start it I wasn't getting any fuel or spark.

After finding out what I had done, I reattached the correct wires and tried to start it again. NOTHING. Still no stark or fuel pump.

What my question is, is what does this green wire with a black stripe go to, and what does it do??? It is located between the intake and the alternater. It is one wire with a black connecter.

If I'm right the only thing that connects not getting spark and not getting fuel is the ECU. I have changed out the ECU with 3 other ones. Still nothing.

Recap:
The car does turn over but does not spark or get gas.
Changed out the ECU with 3 other ones and still no luck
Checked all the fuses and none are blown.
I know that the fuel pump works because I bench tested it
There is NO power going to the fuel pump.

Please help me, I'm going through Withdraw!!!!

Thanks,
Brandon

are you sure all the fuses on the driver side shock tower are ok? the starter will still crank if they are blown, but nothing else.

I had the same prob when I changed tranny's make sure the ground wire from the top of the tranny to the fire wall is pluged in cause I over looked it and the same thing happened to me you descibed, if thats not the problem make sure the ground that connects to the clutch release cylinder is bolted between the cyliniod and the trannny. If neither of those help could be your starter I got one I'll let go for $25 plus shipping. lemme know if that helped

Come on!! surly someone knows!

It is the green wire with a black stripe. It comes directly out of the big wad of wires from the wiring harness. It almost seems like it is ment to plug into the back of the alternater. BUT IT IS NOT. It seems like a diagnostic wire for somthing.

WHAT IS IT!!!!!!!

HELP!!

Okay, right on top of the thermostat housing you should see a hex bolt with a single connector sticking out of it. This spade is where the connector goes. It's purpose in life is to turn on the small cooling fan on the front of the radiator by grounding out the fan relay. It is a switch, which when energized by high water temp will provide a short to ground. It should be open otherwise. Offhand, I don't see any relation between this circuit and the ECU. All it does is ground a relay coil and turn on a cooling fan warning light. Now to troubleshoot: Do all your warning lights turn on when you turn the ignition on? This indicates a normal connection to the alternator via the single white/black stripe wire. Do you have battery voltage at the large alternator terminal? If not, your problem is a blown underhood 80A fuse, or the wire from that fuse to the ignition switch. That wire is very important - it provides power via the ignition switch to the main relay and fuel pump relay. Without that juice, no fuel pump, no spark. Sounds like your symptoms, huh?! The black/white stripe wire on the main relay (on driver's firewall right by the fender wall) should have 12V with the ignition on, as well as cranking. Hope this helps, otherwise post with more information and we can go on from there.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!

Ok, heres what happens, 2 out of the 5 ECU's (I've gotten more) light up all of the dash lights. When I say light up dash lights I mean ALL the warning lights light up. The shift Up light even comes on.

The Other 3 Ecu's just light up the normal lights. Which ECU should I put in??

Also you said "Do you have voltage at the large Alternator terminal??"

Where is the alternator terminal. If I'm right I think it is the terminal that plugs into the back of the alternator. Is that what you are talking about??? It would only make sense! I just need to be sure.

Also Is the relay that you are talking about screwed to the drivers side brace that holds on the quarter panel? It is a brass square box that has 2 sets of wire harnesses that come out of it. Is that it???? I replaced that too.

Should I be able to see the wire coming from the 80AMP fuse to that relay??

Thanks again,

Brandon

Well, I went out and connected one end of my test light to the - on the battery and the other end to both of the wires on the ALT. I didn't get any + from any of the 2 wires. I did all this with the ignition on.

I also probed into the black and white striped wire. There is no positive charge in it also.

I also know that it's not the 80Amp fuse because my starter and everything else works.

I also double checked all the fuses in the engine compartment with an Ohms tester. They all checked out.

What is the next step now????

Thanks again,

Brandon

Ohh, and one more thing, Since it seems like the wire might have gone bad, is it possible to just run a wire from the battery and tie it into the main relay so we know for a fact that it is getting power!??!! I would go ahead and do it to save some time, but I don't want to hurt anything else!!

Thanks
Brandon

WRITTEN IN ERROR. Sorry Brando, I made a post that I was not sure of . See the pm I sent explaining, please. By the way, you do know that the fuel pump does not work on a 86=88 just by turning the key to the on position????? You have the pump running when the key is fliped to START, momentarily and will keep running only if the car is running. There is a switch in the air flow meter that *makes* when the flapper door opens. This sw is not made when the door is shut, as in not running.
I'm going back to my original post where I indicated that the ECU is under the passengers feet. Its not that unit called a CPU next to your left foot. I thought you had an abundance of ECU'S. Found it a little odd.
And I just realized that Irv wanted to see if you had a good 80amp fuse and you do because when the key is turned to on you get the idiot lites and that is what he was looking for. The BIG question not answered is, is there 12v at the Main relay located more than less under the trail coils? Just remove the three 10mm nuts that hold the coil assy and flip it out of the way so you can get the large plug off.

Ok I'm still a little confused. Is the ECU and the CPU the same thing???

You said to take off the coils so I can get the large plug off. What does that plug go to, and why should I take it off??!!

Also, there are a BUNCH of black w/ white striped wires. The one that I tested is the one that goes to that brass thing that is on the drivers side that is right next to the quarter panel.

What does the main relay look like???????????
Am I testing the right wire or not??? I am truely confused right now.

HELP!@!

Lets start over, What should I test?!!

Thanks,
Brandon

For beginners, read the ERROR post I made earlier. Then do this to prove the pump does indeed get power and is working. ON the righthand strut tower, close to the pressure sensor(black rectangular box) you WILL see a yellow connector not going to a darn thing. It has two wires. One black, the other brown. Get a piece of wire and , with the key on (not start) jumper the two wires together. Did you hear a click??? If or even if you did not, go to the rear of the car and listen for the pump a pumpin. Did the pump, pump. I'll stay on line for the next hour. Need answer. P.S. Leave the main relay connected at this time, and any other thing that has been taken off.

Question

When I turn on the ignition and I put the jumper in the yellow connecter nothing happens. There is no click. The fuel pump doesn't come on and I can't hear any fuel running through the rails.

Thanks,

Brandon

OK, go back to the main relay where you were earlier. The plug that you want to take off is the round white one with two wires. One is black and white striped. Put a meter on it . Do you have 12v when the key is on>>?????????Write back, I'll hang on for an hour or so.

No, I don't get anything. There is no positive going to that. There is nothing positive coming from either of the 2 wires. the weird thing is though, if I test for neg coming from the wires, then I can pick up a negative charge coming from both of the wires. That can't be right can it?? I have a test light. When I plug it in one of the holes it is real bright. When I plug it in the hole, it lights up real dim. What does this mean???

Wait a sec, when I tested for 12 volts I disconnected the round connecter and touched my testlight to the wire that goes away from the relay. Do you want me to test for power coming off the relay???

If you had the key to the on(not start) and have no 12v, then IRV WAS RIGHT AGAIN! ARRRRGH! OK. Your almost fixed, it just does not seem that way. Pull the other plug off, the one with four wires. It is brownish in color and square more or less and goes also to the main relay. See if the Black wire with a green stripe has 12v. Also the white wire with a blue stripe for 12v. Almost home free. I'll stich around for.......

Ok. That last test was to more or less for me to gain confidence in your tester. Back to the two wire connector that has the black and white wire. It gets fed from a fuse next to your left foot. That fuse should be a 15amp fuse. It should be in the middle row of fuses. It should be in the second row if you start counting the rows from the rear of the car towards the front. Earlier when I said *MIDDLE ROW* that was counting from top to bottom or bottom to top since there are five rows. If that fuse is not blown..........duh. I'll hang around for ............EDIT.. If you still have the cover for the fuses, it should be the one callled ENGINE.

Your welcome. The real thanks goes to IRV, THE GODFATHER. Don't mess with this guy. He's MAFIA. By the way, I'd get me a relatively cheap meter from Radio Shack if your to keep the car. Make sure it has some reasonably long, removable leads. You can get a 20 buck one there but the leads are non removable. A slight handicap, but will also work as long as its digital.
