What width tires will fit on an 8" rim?

Hey guys, I tried to do a search on this, but it looks like the search button has been disabled for bogging the server down... so here goes.

I have 8" rims on my 1990 T2. I'm looking for the widest tirest that you can fit on them. The rims are 17x8 with a 38 offset. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I was looking into the Nitto 555R drag Radials, but the only size that made much sense for my application was a 275/45R17, but I don't think that would fit back there... just curious if anyone has tried and what the largest rubber you've been able to squeeze back there.

Thanks in Advance!

I bought a car last year that some one had put 225/45/18's on the Ft and 285/40/18's on the rear (on 8" wide rims). They do go on but it was stock suspention and the overhang of the tyres was to much. I will be running 255/40/18's when i get hold of some.

The one thing you have to remember is how far the tyre overhangs the rim, it may go on but will look S**t.
