What turns the aux fan on?

I was wondering, cause the damn thing came on on me the other day. I hooked up the battery, to find suitable power/ign/light wires for my gauges, and the damn thing was on. I unplugged it, and a light came on in the idiot cluster. Just wondering what turns it on.

The car had no coolant in it and hasnt been run yet.

There is a sensor up by the filler neck, if you unplug it the fan will stay on all the time.

green wire? i have the wire/plug, but nothing to connect it to...

funny you mention that, today i was looking at an automatic 86 GXL, and it had that wire plugged into something on the filler neck that my filler neck does NOT have..

The A/C turns it on. Also, if your temp gets to something like 208º

I wonder if my A/C compressor not being is has something to do with it. Maybe the wire is grounding somewhere.
