I've heard that the s5 has an oil pump problem or something like that. but its perfectly balanced. I havent heard anything wrong with the s4 turbo 2 except it has less stock HP but I just wanted to know if all of this is fact or fiction. id also like more pro's n con's to weigh the options.

i cant remember where i seen it but it was a break down of upgrades, i thinkn bnr turbo upgrades, but anyways it showed that after a certain point, and that point came fast, the two motors made the same amount of power.

putting an s4 engine into an s4 chassis is easier than trying to put an s5 engine into a s4 chassis...

just something to think about.

Do you know what your goals are with the car, more specifically about power, powerband, driveability, amount of boost, meth injection, fuel supply etc? What your planned route for modding would be? Whether more power right now would benefit your driving style, or just cause you to hit that curb much more quickly?

These cars and engines have been around for 20 yrs now, i'm SUUUURE someone has cataloged the differences between S4 and S5 engines before, somewhere on this site. Now if only there was a way to find it easily...

An S5 TII swap (into an '86) will likely make you want to shoot yourself, yet net you essentially the exact same power potential as you can have with an S4 TII. An S4 engine with an S5 turbocharger (superior design) is the way to go if retaining the stock turbo. If planning to heavily modify the engine, there is a slew of other factors to consider. When comparing the two, don't be confused by the higher HP rating of the S5 engine. S5s run 2 psi more boost in stock form.

yeah. I'm going to drift it. but Im just looking for the right engine to start with. getting the s5 engine into it isnt the problem. deciding which series I want is. I imagine after I port it id like to look at 300hp. with my own custom mods. such as turbo downpipe and exhaust. I dont mind the rebuild either. I found a great thread a member posted that explains the costs and I have a personal shop with all the tools i'll need. All i need to know is which swap would be better for the drifting sport. the oil pump can be an issue. but can that issue be fixed?? would it even be worth fixing? I am just looking for the pro's n con's in both engine.

The oil pump issue is the OMP if I am reading this right. The difference is on the s4 it is mechanically controlled from the TB, it is reliable and doesn't mess up often. The s5 has an electronically controlled OMP, from time to time they go bad and when they do go bad they take out the ECU with it. I'm sure this doesn't happen every time, but it did happen to me in my s5 NA. IF you do a search on this site you will find dozens of threads about it.

Then use an s4 engine unless you like making things difficult.

s4 is the way to go .. there is no limp mode on the ecu when removing the omp. but if you go s4 try sourcing an s5 rear plate because they are stronger
