What should be done on a tranny rebuild??
What should be done on a tranny rebuild??
i am soon going to get a used engine and tranny and drivetrain ot of an 86 sport ( i am pretty sure) and it has ~120K on it. I know what i am going to do to the engine but i have no idea what to do for a tranny rebuild. what do you suggest be done to it. All i can think of is to flush it out and clean the hell out of it and then put redline in.
Any suggestions out there?????

I would suggest finding a shop to do it for you. Looks REALLY complicated to me. Like 400 little gears that look exactly alike. Not fun. Save the $$, and look for a better tranny. My bestfriend just got the tranny out of his 89 Formula rebuilt, and it cost $900 for a rebuilt tranny from Advanced Auto Parts, $1200 for a local shop to do it for him!
Are you having the tranny rebuilt professionally or are you doing it yourself? Manual tranny is alot cheaper to rebuild in most cases than a automatic. 120k, I would check the synchros to see if they are worn and the shift forks. For these parts wear over time, especially the syncros. If you have blown gears thats a different story. Thats where it will cost you alot more to rebuild the tranny. I doubt thats the case though unless the owner before beat the hell out of the tranny.
ok heres the deal. i am getting the whole deal (engine and entire drivetrain) for 350 $ and you cant beat that. i am goo with tools and instructin, i have a service manual. i am going to clean the whole thing out till it sparkels. use a small electric motor to spin it and spin it with some teflon for a while (with heat applied) i will then drain that and put in the gear fluid.
clutch and fork and all that **** will be replaced. my question is....what else???

well, cant hurt can it???
i was actually planning on putting a pretty good amount of heat on it. prolly wouldnt use an electric motor to spin it but do that by hand. doesnt matter, i was hoping to bond the teflon to the gears. i know absolutely jack **** about trannys and that is why i posted asking for help. if you dont like my ideas maybe you have some better ones....

All you will accomplish is wasting your time. If you want to have a friction modifier applied to your gears contact one of the companies that specialize in applying them. You cannot control the atmosphere or the environment to properly apply these coatings. Or when you are done rebuilding the tranny run Royal Purple or Redline.
ok does anyone have ANY idea what to do on a tranny rebuild? i dont mean to bitch about free help but all i have recieved so far is what not to do, and how my ideas wont work.

Is there anything wrong with the tranny that you know of?? You shouldnt just open up the transmission before dianosing whats wrong with it first. I suggest changing the oil. Then drive the car see how the transmission is working. Does the gears grind? Is it hard to select gears?? My point is to try diagnose whats wrong with it first before you open it up. The best diagnostic tool is the car.
yeah, give it a shot in the car before you try rebuilding it...
I would like to rebuild a manual tranny next. I want something new to learn. All i know about them now is that it is not easy, and require lots of special tools like different pullers and stuff.

this is a manual tranny that i am getting along with an engine from a junk car, it would be too much trouble to put it in my car just to see the condition it is in. i cant drive the car how it is now. so i was wondering which parts i should replace and all i am basically gonna do with the gears is open it up and look for any bad wear. all i wanna know is what parts need to be replaced or would often go bad (i.e. what makes the gears grind???)

Syncros are what you're talking about. I would also check the the shift forks and collar. Basically what happens when you select a gear is the shift fork moves the collar of a synchronizer assembly so that a connection is made between the synchronizer and the speed gear. The speed gears when not held by the shift fork/collar/synchronizer assembly can freewheel because they have bearings inside of them (these can go bad). Btw there are bearings in each of the speed gears and the shaft end that connects to the drive gear which you cannot see. They make noise when they go hence a reason why the car is an important dianostic tool. IMHO I would suggest you research on how a manual tranny works just to get a basic idea if you haven't done so already. Good luck.

finally, thank you very much. i am pretty familiar with how a tranny works, i just did know which parts went bad. i am not about to take all the gears out, but any bearings i can replace on the outside, as well as the synchros are what i am aimin for
A friend of mine pulled his TII tranny apart weeks ago and decided to let a professional do the job. The gears need to be pressed off and back on to do it properly. Unless you have a press I would suggest letting a trans shop do it. Atleast you might end up with some sort of warranty. Thats what I'm going to do. He found a rebuild kit for $150 and the labor will probably run $200-250 maybe a little less since a racing friend of ours owns a trans shop. Those buddy prices are hard to beat.
