What is a SAF T KEY?

I searched the forum and Internet, but didn't find any info.

What is this thing? A SAF T KEY?

It's behind or under the dash on the driver's side.

Looks like a quick disconnect kill switch or something. What color are the wires it's connected to?

There's a black, red, blue and brown wire off this thing that go to ground.

The white and green wires on the SAF T KEY are tied into a black w/green stripe on a wiring harness in the car.

^ This.

The car won't run without that thing plugged in. Older dodge rams' came with a similar device installed at the dealer and mounted near the obdII port.

Thanks.

Will have to decide if it's something my son wants to keep on his car. I can see issues with it being lost at some point in the future....and then have difficulties troubleshooting a no spark or no fuel problem.

glue it in place, then tape it, then put it in concrete. then stuff it back under the dash and forget its there.

It was most likely a dealer installed option. My 88 gxl has the same thing installed, under the dash almost directly below the steering wheel. When I pull the "key" out it cuts power between the ignition and the starter. I'll pull mine out when I'm going out of town and the car is parked for extended periods of time, or if I'm in a parked in a sketchy neighborhood. I've never had a problem with mine, and the way I look at it a thief would have a slightly harder time bypassing that than a fuel cut switch.

its just a piece of junk that the dealer managed to sell someone 20 years ago for a couple hundred bucks installed as a "anti theft device".

easily bypassed though, most of the time all you had to do was jam a knife along it to bypass it.

Correct, or you can just cut the damn thing off and defeat the starter kill by putting the wires back together.

There are much more clever ways of adding an active starter kill to an RX7 (The above and a starter kill switch is passive).

1) An alarm
2) A relay ties to the high beam switch (only starts when pressed)
3) A relay tied to the rear window defrost switch (only starts when pressed)
4) a relay tied to the cigarette lighter socket (only starts when pressed)
5) a relay tied to the dome light switch (only works when switched on)
6) a relay tied to the door pin switch and brake switch (must have foot on brake, clutch and the door has to be open)

The list goes on!
