What RX7 to get?

Hey guys, this is probably in a sticky, but I chose to get direct advice. I was wondering what year and model rx7 to get. I already have a 87 Supra as my daily driver, and obviously would like a rx7. I'm gonna try and save up to 3000-3300$. I heard the 89-91? RX7's are hard to find parts for. So I was thinking maybe a 86, 87, or 88? Should I get a turbo? This is going to be my mod car, so ya.

hell man i say just get a turbo II. just my opinion. i have a 88 se but i am doing a swap from a 10th ae. so if want a turbo car then get one and then mod the hell out of it. i don't think that it is too hard to get parts for rx7's unless youre talking about odd body kits and things like that.

ive been doing the same research as im in the market for one and im thinking 89-91 for a couple reasons... 1st ill be trying to get a turbo one, which insures 4 psiton brakes up front stock. that way i just need to upgrade pads and rotors, then it comes with ABS as well, the tail lights in the 89 up imo are better looking (personal taste) Seats are better (but those will be changed out anyways) alos has tilt steering wheel and with the turbo model you get an LSD...

There are a few my friend.

www.mazdatrix.com for oem parts
www.andysautosport.com for wheels, shifters, kits, etc
www.corksport.com for other misc interrior/exterrior parts
www.hksusa.com for exhaust and ignition options

there are more.
I just got my RX7 a few months ago, before that I didn't even know what this car was, but im slowly falling in love with the seven. There are SOOOOO many things you can get for this car, parts are readily available all over the place if you know where to look, almost as many aftermarket parts as the civic!

But yea get a TII. I have an NA, but I got a really good deal on it and just couldn't pass it up. But for the money your talking about, you should be able to get a good condition TII.
Make sure you defenitly read the 'what to look for when buying an fc' article thats stickyed on this page. I believe its in the faq.

Nearly all of the parts are interchangable between the Series 4 and 5 cars, and even some of the parts from Series 1-3 and Series 6+ will more or less interchange. The Series 5 tail lights are sought after by most of the younger people who like them better, so in that case, they are hard to find for a good price. Other than that, I can't think of any major price differences that can't be easily overcome. However, the initial price of a Series 5 car will be more because they are newer and usually in much better shape.

If you want a turbo, get a turbo. If not, then don't. It's really that simple. The turbo cars only cost $500-1,000 more than the non-turbo cars, so there is no point in converting a non-turbo into a turbo. The insurance is usually the same price for all coupes Series 1-5, and the EPA estimated gas mileage is only about 1mpg less on the turbo vs non-turbo. Just keep in mind that if the drivetrain is the focus of your "mod car", then you are looking at spending about twice as much on the turbo, where a nice turbo engine setup costs around $10,000 if new parts and professional work is involved.

The differences between the series are covered in the "Sticky", but the preference is up to you. Note that these cars are old, and probably don't have the exact equipment now that they did from the factory, so the original list of options may not apply to the used cars you are looking at.

The S5's are nicer as far as the body and interior goes. Also the drivetrains are better. The S4's are cheaper and every bit as good. If you got $3000 don't get taken by spending all of it on the car itself. Keep an eye out for steals. For example. A '88 GXL sold for $400 because it was out of gas and the owner was dumb. The car was flawless. Perfect body and interior and ran perfect. I just bought a '90 GTU for $800 from an old lady who was the original owner and the car is near perfect. Just keep an eye out in your area for good deals. Just don't buy anything automatic and stay away from the SE models or anything 4 lug.

The 1989-1990 GTUs Also has everything you listed above (4 piston brakes, LSD ect)....It is basically a TII without the Turbo. Awesome car for AutoX ect...

Ah...and the best parts is the GTUs has a 4:30 Final drive Ratio, wich makes Acceleration a bit quicker (compared to other N/A's)

But if you are wanting a good street car to Mod ect....Go TII.. S5(89-91) If you can find one...

GXL's are great if you want power everything and lots of luxury. Turbos are great, but more things can go wrong with them.
