What RPM are you at in 5th at 60mph?
THis is for everyone that has a fivespeed. I did the swap from auto to manual.. i need to say 200% diffrence. I used to have to floor it to move from a dead stop. I also got around 14mpg.. With the five speed i am getting over 23mph. I hardly need to even touch the gas and it takes off. Never knew how crappy these autos were. I never got over 170miles a tank. and now im about to hit 280miles and i still have a bit of gas left. The thing is i kept the rearend that the auto used. And My rpms are Higher at cruise. Not that its a super bad thing because I think you get better milage at higher rpms. But i am running around 3 grand in 5th at 60 mph. Seems a bit high to me. What are you guys running?
Virts had a different rear end in the auto tranny i think
3.91
I dont know which you got either
I got a auto too, I know what you mean about how crappy they are, take alook in your service book for the ratios, they're so horrible man

You can use this calculator to find what speeds you'll be at in different gears: http://www.catherineandken.co.uk/sti/tyres.html
Gear ratios are available in the standard specs FAQ.
Mine for instance, is a .806 5th gear w/ a 4.1 rear end, so i'm at 2750 rpm at 60 mph & 3650 rpm at 80 mph. It's a j-spec transmission, so 5th is taller. US-spec TII transmissions will be .711, .719 or .762 depending on year, and the rpms in 5th will be lower. Lower rpms are better for gas mileage, but having peak torque on tap is nice too. I'm still able to manage 20+ mpg highway cruising at 80+ mph.

Need to fix a mistake i made. I am at 2600 at 60 in 5th not 3000. that was 4th.. But yes about 80 i am at 3000 in 5th.
Gas milage is Great. Drove alot today and the gas gauge Moves so slow.

I'm close to 3000 in 5th gear at 60. 87 TII. Front end is out of alignment and I have feedback in the brake pedals due to a rotor that needs to be replacing, so the pads may be dragging a little bit, too...
On second thought, my car probably isn't the best to take advice from.
Sorry.
