I think its a relay on the drivers side, dunno the function. My friends 79SA has something similar on the drivers side and if I recall from when I've been under da dash of my fc I believe I've seen it

Try the fsm electrical section look

Nope, it is the cruise control computer. The one in the pictures at the top of this thread is for a 86-88 non turbo.

It generally goes above the CPU in the drivers kick panel, unless you have a vert, in which case it goes next to the ECU.

the thing on the 79 sa is also cruise control it was located behind the driver seat underneath the storage bin
