What Oil Viscosity for Racing?
What Oil Viscosity for Racing?
Hi
New to this form. My first post.
What would be the best oil viscosity for a 13B in a 1986 for some amateur racing this Spring and Summer?
The oil was recently changed by my local Mazda dealer and they now tell me they used 5W-30, which is likely far too thin.
Mike.

in summer time people run 30-50 i know in arizona they do exspecially if your racing you will want a little thicker oil because of the heat that will be produced from runnning the engine hard.
just use 10-40 and be done with it. If it gets really cold to be safe run 5-30, warmer weather anything will work. Hell right now Im running Kendall Straight 70, though ussualy I stick with 20-50. It really doesnt matter though, its oil. Not like running one over the other will hurt anything. Sometimes I run 10-30, other 20-50, If its cheaper I run 70... Like I said, if its cold out, run a thinner oil to be safe, though once warm a thick oil will behave like a thinner oil. Just use common sense when choosing oil.

According to Mazda:
In starting and operating temperatures below 20F, use 5W30
In starting and operating temperatures between 0F and 80F, use 10W30.
In starting and operating temperatures above 30F, use 20W50
As far as brand any good quality oil that meets the API SL or SM standards should be fine.

If we're talking synthetic, it doesn't matter, cause the higher quality synthetic stock should handle almost anything you throw at it.
If we're talking regular, mineral engine oil, run 20W50 unless you see freezing temps?
