i asked mazdatrix about running 225's up font. this is what they said:
"I have 225 x 50 x 16's on the front of my '86 (245's on rear). I needed somewhere around 1/8" to 3/16" spacers. Being incredibly lazy, I just put some big washers over the studs."

a 17" wheel shouldent make a difference.

You would need a 30 to 35 MM or ET offset to fit a 17x7 with a 225.
*edit
BTW: a 225/45-17 will be closer to the stock size and speedo than the 225/40. The 225/45 will only be off by a touch more than 10th of an inch (diameter). However the the 225/40 will be off almost 1 inch in diameter, resulting in a speedo error of around 3.2 % (too fast).

So if i wanted to go with 235s all around would i need a 17x7.5 with spacers up front or should that also fit with a 30 or 35 offset. Also, what does the offset affect, just how the wheels will fit or will it affect the turning, or any other performance aspects? and if i have spacers up front but none in the back will the front wheels stick out from the fender and look stupid. what size spacer would i need up front? Thanks.

235's are really too tight in the fronts.  The offset has to be PERFECT and the fender lip needs to be rolled.  It would also help to run some camber plates to run a little negative camber up front to tuck the tire in...
