what octane should I be using?

curently I'm using 91, but I heard from someone that 87 should be fine, can anyone confirm this? Below is a list of my current setup:

S5 w/ TII conversion
Knight Sports Turbocharger
Knight Sports ECU
Knight Sports Dual Pulley System
HKS 3" down pipe
straight pipe

Not on a turbo. 91 is probably the minimum you should be running, unless you're running higher than stock boost. If so, i'd probably stick with 93 to be safe.

If you don't boost it, you could get away with 87. But, then again.....why would you wanna do that? Go 91. The 87 is for the n/a guys.

Thanks for the input, I'm currently boosting anywhere between 5-15psi. Would I be risking any damage by using 91 only?

Wow! Before you boost @ 15psi again PUT 93 IN! You can get away with 91 even 87(not boosting much) on a stock TII setup running the fairly low factory boost settings. But once you start moding it and changing turbos as you have, your gonna need 93 to keep it safe.

WoW, thats really shitty. Well then don't run anything less than 91. Also, getting it professionally tuned will be a big plus in terms of keeping it within safe limits.

I'm looking into getting a Power FC, but lacking fund now. Guess, I'll just keep the boost within 10 psi for now and using 91 octane. Hopefully, I'll be safe boostin for the time being. Thanks for the input guys.

My local Sunoco has 94 octane. That's what I use.

watch out with 94.....if you're on a custom setup (not stock turbo etc)I would stay with 93.....as some of the 94's contain ethanol.

Do we have to have another thread on this??? The search function is found in the uer right hand corner of the page...

If LittleCon had searched he (or she) would have found that anything more than 87 octane on a stock FC motor actually is more likely to cause problems, and will actually result in less HP.

See the octane rating has absolutely nothing to do with BTU or power output. The only thing higher octane numbers do, is make it harder to pre-ignite. It makes the burn slower. Higher octane does not contain any additional power or performance unless the motor was designed or tuned to run on a higher octane (and even then the additional power is only a result of higher compression or boost along with computr processing).

In fact (more so on a non-turbo) you want the gas to ignite as easy as possible. Lower octane on a rotary with less than a 10:1 compression actually burns cleaner and faster than a higher octane.

So using higher octanes on a stock motor will result in increased deposits on the rotor faces(which could result in pre-mature engine failure), less power, and less money in your wallet.

So why would you waste the money and buy anything but 86 or 87 octane???

And finally, thread closed. Covered and proven countless times before.

Fuel octane greater than 87 means the gas is burning slower and not detonating all at once.

That is often good for pistons but not for wankels. Too high of octane and you wont be burning all the gas as fast as the motor wants too. You WILL loose performance using greater than 87 and you WONT gain anything otherwise.

Using race fuel or octane boosters is a bad idea as it can lead to undetonated gas in the exhaust manifold....

I use premix in my rotarys so that means i am running less than 87 octane, and I get much better performance than straight 87 or greater octane fuel.

This topic is very tired... learn to search people.

Sorry, but just to clarify things. So, with my current setup I should be using 87 octance instead of 91?

Knight Sports Turbocharger
Knight Sports ECU
Knight Sports Dual Pulley System
HKS 3" Downpipe
