The common consensus is to use the lowest octane your motor will allow without knocking. Why this is? I dont know...Alot depends on if your timing is advanced or not. The more advanced the timing, the higher octane you need...

We all pay much more money for super unleaded so that our cars that don't knock to start with will knock even less.

What do you think an "octane rating" means?

That bullshit, as you so eloquently put it, is good information to have. The originator of this thread MAY or MAY NOT have thier timing advanced. That DOES affect the octane of gas you use...if you are BONE STOCK...use 87...

Ah, I see, this is an IQ test of the forum members. You should have started a poll rather than a regular thread.

I use 87 with really far advanced timing in my 89GXL. I felt a power difference and seems perfectly safe.

i am not a she, and yes is it really so to put a number down from 87-93
TIMING is stock EVERYTHING is stock. so far i get low octane numbers
and isnt the compression ratio 9.7 on a stock NA...so either the timign was turned way down when teh car went in to production or u guys are using the worng octane

Can't you people use the search feature? I've already written a diatribe on why people with stock N/A Rx-7s should use 87 and 87 ONLY. Look it up.

Brandon

Oh, and yeah it talks about "all that knocking or not knocking bullshit". If you don't want to know WHY you should use 87, then feel free to throw your money away and possibly (depending on who you talk to) kill your engine.

Well, whether or not it "kills" your engine, using the higher octane leveled gas DEFINITELY made my car run BETTER! That is not my opinion. It is an experimented fact in my case. I've also added octane booster to 91 octane premium fuel and noticed positive difference in the way the car ran. So, you can say that 87 is the best and should only be used, but I've experience different results regardless.

Agreed. N/a's run fine on 87, but often run better on higher octanes, especially once you advance the timing.
