What model is this?

ok so i bought another rx7......good price....i saw the s5 tails and was sold....ok the guy had the title...its to an 87(i dont think its the title to the parts car i got, dont care)....however it had s5 taillights, s5 interior (stereo surround, warning light surround i know).....when i removed the s5 lights, not cutting or bending had been done to make them fit.....im hoping its an 89 gtu so i can steal the tranny set up even though it does run....is there any way to make 100% sure which model it is? like a number located somewhere on the chassis... i know the engine has been swapped too...how can i tell whether its an s4 or s5 engine?

informative feedback = wanted
**** talking = dont waste your time, kthx.

What's your VIN?
If it has an K, L, or M in it, it's a Kouki model...

If it has the automatic seat belts its an 89, on the engine look for the oil metering pump electric =89+ , mechanical =88-. The gauge cluster should have round faces throughout.

It sounds like there is no telling what is in this car. Therefore, the best way to check the differential is to block the front wheels, put the rear of the car up on jack stands, place the transmission in neutral, and rotate the rear tires by hand while watching the driveshaft. Placing chalk marks on the driveshaft and tire will help you to count the revolutions.

41:10 = Standard 4.10 rear
43:10 = GTUs 4.30 rear
43:11 = AT 3.909 rear

FYI you can buy a 4.30 ring and pinion gear set from Mazda or aftermarket dealers like Mazdatrix, so it's not like you need to search the Earth looking for a GTUs if you like this gear ratio.

I'm not aware of any easy nubie methods to determine between the regular NA and GTUs transmission. Since only the 5th gear is different, it's not going to matter much anyway.

If it has been altered, then whatever model is "is", it isn't anymore.

Look in the doorjamb and see if there is a sticker listing a code beginning with FB and ending with two numerical digits. At least that would tell you what the body used to be.

Just about anything like water pumps and OMP's can be changed, but usually if it has the VDI intake, then it is a S5 engine.

you could also check the airbox to see if it is a cone style or flapper door style. Although that could have been changed as well.

That tells me that it has 4 lug wheels, and probably the stock single piston calipers and smaller brake rotors. That's about it, because you could put 4 lug wheels on a TII body if you wanted to.

then it's a kouki. This could be really easy if you'd give us the VIN.

sorry I meant AFM. Kouki means later model or something to that effect. It refers to s5s.

No, the airflow meter (AFM) is behind the box. The S4 afm is rectangular while the S5 is cylindrical. Don't bother looking because it would require that you remove some parts, which may not be such a good idea.

Just a thought, but if you don't know the difference between an S4 and S5 RX-7, what makes you think that your car has S5 tail lights and interior?

Today's vocabulary words for J-Speak 101:

zenki = earlier
chuki = middle
kouki = later

Since there are only two versions of the 2Gen RX-7, the S4 is the earlier (zenki), and the S5 is the later (kouki).

You don't need to post the last digits in the VIN if you want to keep some privacy here on the internet. Just post the VIN up to the last letter and that will be enough to identify the chassis year.

if you have 4 bolt wheels then it's 99% an 86-88. since all 89-91's have 5. I highly highly doubt anyone would ever put 4 bolt hubs onto an 89-91.
