What kind of halfshafts / axles / drive shafts are these?
What kind of halfshafts / axles / drive shafts are these?
I am trying to figure out what kind of shafts I have in this donor car im taking apart. I took out the diff, and it appears to be LSD. But I do not know whether it is turbo or NA lsd, so I chose to investigate the shafts that came with it.
Attached you will find a pic.
Measurement A is the diameter of the shaft itself
Measurement B is HORIZONTAL distance between either two holes on the shaft mating surface, or two bolts on the diff mating surface. Note that the measurement was taken from the OUTERmost portion of each of the two holes.
Measurement C is the outer diameter of the DIFF mating surface Boot. (not the same as the wheel-mating boot)
If someone could compare these pics to their shafts/diff or to their knowledge and let me know, that would be great!

Ah dude, if only you posted this like a week ago I would've broken out the (measurement) calipers and measured them myself. I just got my hubs, rotors, and (brake) calipers back on though and I'm not prepared to take it all apart again.
GL though

In the FSM, it shows measurements for the driveshaft which may help you in determining what sort of diff you have.
Page 9 - 19 of the 86-88 FSM.

I'll keep looking for anything else that may help.

Is this an S4 or S5 / NA or TII ?

Yeah I saw that. It was hard to measure those boots, and mine came out at 98mm which is closer to the turbo size, so I am thinking they are turbo shafts, but I want to know for sure. I was looking for a more precise indicator, such as the horizontal distance on the mating flange of each turbo and NA halfshafts.
The car it came out of was a 86 GX with A TII swap, with a quote unquote "swapped" rear end. However, a lot of the stuff that had been done to the car had been done quite poorly if not blatantly lied about (PO said it had an undriven ACT clutch, whereas it actually had a rusty *** pressureplate hiding an overdriven stocker clutch disc.

Yeah, a lot of bitches will do that.
That's why it's VERY important to either demand receipts, or simply negotiate that without proof of that item in there they can't use it to bargain for a higher price.
TBH, I'm not sure that there's a difference between the GXL and the TII diffs/halfshafts.

Thats just it: nobody is sure.
I dont get why it has to be such a mystery. Like if we just took a few measurements nobody would ever have to guess at it again.
rotary ressurection took a step in the right direction by photographically comparing sizes, but never gave the measurements:

Actually, sure, that would be quite useful.
Just let me know from where to where you are measuring from, and what kind of diff it is (S4,s5, LSD NA, LSD TII, open NA, etc)
If it is LSD TII, would you mind getting the diameter of your halfshafts as well?

then why did you put driveshaft in the title? did you know that a driveshaft and half shaft are two different things?
