what HP are u putting down and do u pass emission?
I think it's 25 years for all cars in any state that require emissions. Don't quote me on that though.
I am probably making (hopefully) 140-150 rwhp, and I will not pass.
Hopefully with a tune I will make more power. Lean out above 5k OH YEAH!

I actually discovered a clause (at least in Texas) that states that if your car is operating in a county that has emissions and is registered in an adjacent county, then they can make you get emissions tested.

Smog cut off is 1974 for Cali.... thanks to The govenator.. No more 30 year rule.
And I think its 40 years for Navada, unless only driven 2k miles a year.

A cat is simply one part of cleaning the exhaust and lowering emissions.
You could be just missing a EGR valve on a S4 and have high enough NOx not to pass even with a cat.
Or you could have a clogged air filter and old spark plugs and not pass with an otherwise intact and functioning emissions system (which would show up as too much CO, and HC).

^^agreed if passing an e-test on a car with stock ports was as simple as bolting up a new cat (which IS very helpful, and in most cases entirely necessary don't get me wrong) then there wouldn't be so many guys failing.
fact is there are far more variables to passing an etest then the condition (or simply presence) of a catalytic convertor

i am talking about a properly FUNCTIONING car... (but i AM arguing with someone whose's car doesnt even run...)
since when did hp affect egr valve?
his question was, how much hp can be had before emission becomes a problem
and my answer was, as much power as you can make out of the stock ports
the most important thing being the stock port and having a cat converter rather than a test pipe.
re-read the title and first post. there is no reason why egr or other factors should be brought up. unless you are suggesting high hp and boost kills the egr valve... then take one off a ls1

Rat
1. 172 all motor
2. hell no, but we don't have emissions anymore for any cars that aren't OBD II. Sniffers are now gone as of 1st of the the year
