NOTHING to do with backpressure... dashpots are little mushroom shaped devices that slowly let the throttle close so that the plates don't suddenly snap shut.
Yes, it will give you bigger backfires, but do you REALLY want to do that? I'm warning you now, it will fack up your synchros, because your rpm won't be in the range that it was designed to be in when you shift. Furthermore, you risk stalling your car whenever you let off the throttle.
To me, it's not worth it.
Just get rid of your acv, airpump, cats, and put a header/resonator on. That, my friend, is the perfect combination for the rotary flames you desire.
That's one thing i miss about my NA. Shooting flames so far that you light up the car's bumper behind you.

I don't understand why people are willing to do or take off parts to get bigger flames??? WHY???
Don't take off the dashpot. You need it.
Just think of how you can make the car handle better and run better than trying to think of a way to get bigger flames. Sheees!

I took the dashpots off to make things cleaner and havent noticed any problems. My car doesnt stall when I suddenly let off the gas. The car felt almost exactly the same. I guess it depends on your motor's condition and other things not working like they should. If your car stalls, your tranny breaks or your dog dies after removing them, put them back and start bitching on the forum about how YOU ACTUALLY did it and it worked/didnt work for you.

do it. get rid of it. its free and wont really harm anything. if your car stalls your idles sucks anyway and needed fixing. i canned mine along with all the other emessions stuff over two years ago. no probs at all( if you dont mind trees and small animals dieing in your exhuast fumes.) only side effect ive had to deal with so far are massive asphalt charring flames.

The one down side is you will have to adjust the idle stop periodically to compensate for the extra stress.
Maybe leave it in, but shorten it's stroke to catch just before full closed.

will removing them cause larger flames on a TII with an open vented BOV? I have a blitz bov with my to4b 60-1 turbo and I would have assumed that when you let off the gas the bov vents the air so removing the dashpots wouldn't really affect things. Or, does the BOV vent air when the pressure between the engine and TB becomes negative (vaccuum) so that having the dashpots removed will cause the negative pressure sooner/faster, causing air to be vented sonner/faster, causing bigger flames?

The dashpots are just bolted on to the TB. There are two on the TII TB (one for primary throttle plates and one for secondary throttle plates) and I would assume there are two on the NA TB as well.
Look at your TB. There will be what look like cones pointing at the throttle plate rotaters with little white tips coming out of the cone that are in contact with the rotaters. These are what need to be removed.

I just adjusted my dashpot tonight (N/A). It wasn't even catching the throttle on the way down and the exhaust used to pop when I let off the gas. With it adjusted correctly I like it more. The shifts seem better as Fingers noted. The thing isn't very heavy, is out of sight and isn't really an emissions device IMO. I don't think you could feel any more power with it's removal. I vote, if it still works, leave it on and adjust it properly.
