Yeah looks like a Air/water cooler or possibly the top of some type of supercharging kit.

Yeah... my first impression was a supercharger... but that's a mere guess.

It is as said before an air to water intercooler. If you notice there are no pullies attached and there are water fittings on the front of the intercooler that will allow the water to flow through so that it may cool the intake charge.

ok apparently i didn't make myself clear. i know it's an air/water i/c. sorry i didn't state that.
what i meant was where does/did it come from? it's a cast piece and looks very professional. do any of the old members recognize it?

I just had an idea. You know that line that runs from the back of the water pump, through the BAC to the rear end plate? (What the hell is that for anyway?) You could create an intake pipe with a chamber to allow coolant to pass through. Use a Y to split off of that hose for the coolant source. The intake air will pass though the inter chamber and be surrounded by coolant. Just an idea. It would take a bit of trial and error and some fabrication but it may work.

would that be a good idea considering how hot the coolant gets when the engine is warm???

...which is at 180+degF! In case you missing the point of intercooling, it's to make the air cooler, not hotter (hence the name).

even 180deg F water still might cool the intake charge depending on boost etc. but there will be much less temp. gradient than with an air-to-air. which is why most air/water intercoolers that i am aware of use a seperate heat exchanger or radiator if you will from the rest of the cars cooling system. this way you can have the neer ambiet temps of a air-air but add the benefit of having much fore heat capacity and conductivity which helps for both developing short bursts of coolin (and thus power) and with packaging, sine it doesnt have to be as large to acheive the same level of cooling. as longa as you find room for an extra radiator.........

yeah, I guess you are right. I was thinking about using coolant that just came through the radiator and into the pump but even then, its pretty hot ****. I guess that setup uses a seperate water supply or something. Maybe a reservoir with an electric pump or something, who knows.

But uh, thats an N/A manifold... Whats the point of cooling air with coolant thats going to be hotter? Seperate supply is only thing i think would work.
