I was wondering
what would help to make the clearcoat peeling not as noticable? I need to save up some money to get a paint job but want to do something to make it look better in the mean time. It is black and you can really see it peeling on the hood and the roof. Everything else is in pretty decent shape. thanks

generally 1500 grit is what I use to rid the surface of orange peel(not just peeling), but to sand the clear clean off I have never done

Sand with 600-800, then use polishing compound, then wax. You can't just sand and wax. By the way, be VERY careful around edges. You'll be through the paint very quickly there.

clearcoat repair

This will cost some money but is much cheaper than a paint job.Sand(wetsand) hood and roof with 400 grit paper, just take off the gloss and feather the edges of the peeling clearcoat. Be very careful not to sand through any base coat, wipe down with preps-all or a tack cloth, tape off the rest of the car(old sheets work good)and spraw with new clear, if you get any runs sages, or oarngepeel wait at least 48 hours and wetsand with 1500 grit paper and buff with fine cut compound and then give it a good coat of wax.You should be able to get a quart of cheap clear(nason, western, omnie etc) and hardner for under $50 read the back of the can for mixing and spraying instructions. If you dont know anybody with a spraygun Walmart sells a pretty good one for under $40 Goodluck by the way l just did this to the trunk and hood of an 89 cougar and it turned out great TEDMAN
