What Fuel Octane do you use?

1991 Mazda RX-7 N/A

I've been filling the FC with highest Octane Rating available at any gas station I pump at

I was reading some RX-7 information on http://www.aaroncake.net/RX-7/newowner.htm about fuel and it says "Octane requirements for non-turbo (naturally aspirated or NA) cars are very low. 87 octane should be used if available. Always use the lowest octane fuel you can find. Higher octanes will result in a noticeable power loss, excessive carbon build up, and poorer mileage. "

I'm thinking I need to start pumping 87 Octane into the FC now

^^^Not my turbo. It loves 87. I think i read a while back that mazda designed it to run on 87, so any thing higher is a waste (on stock ish settings ofcourse).

You are definately good with 87.

Yeah, I usually will pump my car full of 87. I put in 93 one time thinking it would make it run better but it actually started running like crap and sputtering a lot. Went back to the 87 and it was smoooooth sailing.

if it was designed for it then you use it. my brother runs 87 in his turbo z with no problems because that what it calls for.

+1

I run 87 on my S5 Turbo. Unless you have higher performance upgrades, you are wasting money by putting anything higher than 87 in the car.

I always run 93 in my t2 swapped n/a. I've always been told that premium is better for turbo cars. So when it comes to the 20cents more a gallon it really doesn't bug me.

Amazing. Not only do you ask a question that has been asked hundreds of times, but you yourself ask it twice in a row.

This thread should be closed.

Everybody that is stock (NA or TII) or close to it should run 87. You will get more power this way.

You may use a different rating system. We (USA) use an average of two different systems ((R+M)/2). I don't recall exactly, but I don't think the two systems are that far different.

I would check to see what type of system you use, and compare that to the US system. You may be running the same octane we run.

Lower octane fuel does not necessarily run better or worse than high octane. The quality of the fuel depends on its composition, not its octane rating. The main advantage of low octane fuel is its lower price, while high octane fuel is a complete waste of money unless detonation or pre-ignition is an issue.

If running bone stock... sure reg will work until your car is old and has less compression and does not run as good then the premium will be better and safer so yoru afr's dont fall..

I have been in the turbo game FAR TO LONG to risk any build or any engine I have seen that has been "modded" running on reg gas..

its all about the tune though..
There's nothing special about the "turbo game" for a stock TII engine.

You're right in that it's all about the tune, the tune is that for a stock TII, it's designed for 87, using stock ignition and fuel settings.

Now when you open up the intake/exhaust, add a bigger turbo, etc., then start using premium.

You're not going to detonate a stock TII by using 87 gas.

I mix it up, I keep a few bottles of octane booster handy.

I noticed with higher octane, higher rpms seem to make a difference, esp once the engines HOT. Just for crusing it bogs down a lot.

I advanced the timing slightly so I run alil higher to protect her
