What exactly does a pilot bearing do and can it cause...

What does a pilot bearing do and can it cause grinding and/or disable the clutch from releasing all the way?

mmm.. crap... my friend and i installed a new tranny and clutch but didnt do the pilot because my friend thought that it was too hard to take out, so i was wondering if theres any way to do it without taking the whole tranny out?

ok one last question, can i still drive the car because the tranny only grind when i shift slow and into second, and rarely third? i mean, it doesnt seem THAT damaged
