What exactly causes the S5 OMP to fail?

Looking at another thread, I was thinking about this.

But what is it exactly that causes the S5 OMP to fail? is it that it gets to greasy, and the oil seeps into the device and ***** it up?
does the little motor burn out?

The reason I brought this up was just to see if there was some preventative maintenence S5 owners could do to prevent problems down the road. A brand new unit is like a grand at mazda, and I think its useless to buy a used unit if you don't know how to prevent it from failing in the future. That is, if you CAN prevent it from failing.

Anyone?

as far as i know the pumps dont really fail .. its the senors on the s5's and when they go they take the ecu with it. i had the omp sensor crack on my s5 . kicked it into limp mode. not a fun time. but i think you would have to worry more about the senors, or the lines before you would have to worry about the pump. cuz its gear drvien

What? I thought it was electric? not gear driven like the S4 omp.

the omp on both the s4 and s5 are both gear driven. the only thing thats differs them is how the flow is realsed. on the s4 you have the rod that connects to the TB and when you increase throttle it pulls the omp open more to flow more. on the s5 its controlled by the ecu by a bunch of variables but its computer controlled. but both are driven by a gear. one controls the flow mechanically and one controls the flow electronicly. thats why the guys with the 86-88 can block off the omp and run pre mix and remove the omp completly with no problems. where as you can do the same thing for the s5 but you have to have the senor hooked up otherwise you will trip the ecu into limp mode.
