What do you think my horsepower is?

88 SE

The engine is bone stock. Drop-in K&N air filter, no cats, straight pipe in place of the first two and the third is only a shell.

The car pulls hard and runs great, I think I have a leaky fuel injector though, as it will randomly idle a little rough and will chug when I leave it in gear and just let off the gas.

So, my question is how much hp do you think I am at? Do you think a Dynomax Super Turbo catback will increase it at all?

That would greatly depend on the engine compression and clutch condition.

IF you're engine was running as well as it did in 88 (you never know, it may be). Then i'd say K&N+anti-cats = +20 hp.

You're looking at 166 flywheel hp or about 140 at the wheels.

Remember, rotaries respond VERY well to exhuast mods .

The last time I did a compression test (dad's a mechanic, nice to have the tools around), all six readings fell within 98-102. The Haynes manual says this is quite close to newly rebuilt specs. Is that true? I will do another compression test when I get back home and have time some night this week.

I suspect that the engine has been replaced by a previous owner, but my dad says it could be the original if it was cared for extremely well, like I do now. The car has become my baby and I religiously change the oil every 3k miles and am always trying to fix something that is broken, even if it is something as stupid as my idiot lights.

The odometer reads 168,400 or so right now and the car still acts great. I need to get a new muffler on my passenger side b/c it is getting pretty plugged. The driver's side is puffing nicely at idle, but the passenger side is hardly letting anything out until you punch the gas, then it acts like the driver's side muffler when it is idling.

I have a feeling this is greatly restricting my exhaust flow and acceleration. It just seems like it doesn't accelerate like it used to.

Just don't baby it too much, make sure to take 'er up to redline every now and then - Keep them 6-ports working and that carbon out .

I take her up 7500 once in a great while, usually getting onto the freeway.

Otherwise, hitting 6k is a common occurance when taking off.

Sorry, but I've never been a fan of estimating horsepower.. Dyno the car. Usually 50-75$ for 3 pulls, then you'll know for sure.

I don't have $50-75 to blow on a dyno. Hell, I can't put that much into a new exhaust at the moment.

This fall I will be able to buy some new stuff. Not to mention, I haven't a clue where to find a shop that has a dyno I could use.
