Question What do you guys think: S5 or S4 TII

i've been having a hard time finding a S5 TII or a GTUs. However i've been seeing many S4 TII in ads and some sale threads. What do you guys think, should I start looking at the S4 TII or just keep on waitting for a S5 TII or GTUs shows up for sale. Does the S4 TIIs have any advantage or specs that a S5 doesn't have. I'm looking for a daily drive and a weekend car to track. Any info will be appreciated.

S5 TII's are hella sweet but a good S4 TII would stomp a GTUs. Any TII is good in my book. But look to spend $1k - $2k more for a slightly faster S5 TII.

Depends on how hard you look. I bought a '87 TII for $100. Needed a manifold and intercooler but had a rebuilt motor in it. Body was the *****. I picked up my '89 GXL for $1000 and it was in near perfect shape and I just got a '90 GTU for $800 that runs fantastic and is nearly flawless (except for a flaky paint job).

hehe, i bought a S5 TII for 3500.... Heavily modded... ^_^ just let u drool a bit...

anyways, if the S4 TII and S5 GTUs are your options, i will get the s4 TII.... one thing, (don't start the S4 vs S5 debate again) but some believe S4s are better, well I like S5s =) but one thing i will prefer S4 over is the Clutch Type LSD at the back instead of the vLSD on the S5

I believe the S4's have less problems but I prefer the S5's because they have better motors and nicer interior/exterior. I think the S5's problems are related to their more "advanced" electronics which turned out to be more of a pain in the ***. The only S4 I would ever buy is a TII.

It's been my experience that they both drive about the same. The S4's have a few more cold sodder issues.

If you want I know of a nice '87 TII that a guy is getting rid of for cheap. Its actually a very good looking car. If you got cash I can make arrangements because he's giving me a good deal. You would just have to come get it and pay for everything.

well, good luck =)

i mean as u said, hard time finding S5 TII..... they are really rare....
at first, before i bought mine, i was planning to buy any na rx-7 2+2
and i didn't mind S4 look or S5 look (i didn't know the OTHER differences then) but then my sister's friend called her, said 89TII for sale, i couldn't resist (i thought about not getting it and wait for a GOOD na....) well.... long story short, i didn't do the searching..... it sort of fell from the sky and hit me on the head =)

all else fails, alot of people turn their na into turbos ^_^
i mean, if it is so hard finding a S5 tII, well, how about finding a blown motor S4 or even blown S5 and add turbo, or swap TII engine turbo in it?

better yet, haven't really seen a REALLY REALLY powerful "na tune" FC in a while...
that would be fun =)

it also hard to find a nice GTUs, i wouldn't mind on getting a n/a 7. however a GTUs is just like a S5 TII. Once in a blue moon type of deal.

s5=mouse belts=gay.

I am so glad that the s5 I bought was a vert. I wouldn't put up with mouse belts. the headache, the bruises, the broken winsheild as a result, just coulndn't handle it.

The S5 look way better than a S4. Especially the taillights. The S5 engine is faster and has more potential. S5 is the improvement of S4. The clutchtype LSD which I have right now is rebuildable but breaks faster and isnt as effective as the VLSD. I'm gonna get a VLSD differential when I got the money. The S4 is often looked at, and people say its ugly and looks old. When they see my S5 they look in awe and say "You sure this is a 1991? Looks new." If S5 is what you really want then get a S5. For me I had this problem too, but I always kept thinkin I wouldnt be satisfied. So I got me a 1991 NA Coupe and now I am currently in the process to rewire my harness so my Jspec 13BT that I jus got will run. Its if u would settle for 2nds. For me, I always go to the fullest with cars and performance parts.

The front bumper is a little better looking.

Yes and no.
The S5 has a higher compression rotor and a little better internals. The S5 turbo was better due to a dual waste gate design and divided exhaust ports. You can put this on a S4 though easily
The S4 has a mechanical OMP and the S5 is electronic. The mechanical is known to be more reliable and can easily be removed from the engine unlike the S5.

I think the S4 LSD is supposed to be a little better but I forget.

[QUOTE] The S4 is often looked at, and people say its ugly and looks old. When they see my S5 they look in awe and say "You sure this is a 1991? Looks new."[QUOTE] Ugly? It looks almost exactly like a S5 other than small variations in the rear and front bumper. The rear tails are objective though. I like both S4 and S5. If some one is looking at an S4 and thinks it's old then you haven't seen a good condition one.

If S5 is what you really want then get a S5. For me I had this problem too, but I always kept thinkin I wouldnt be satisfied. So I got me a 1991 NA Coupe and now I am currently in the process to rewire my harness so my Jspec 13BT that I jus got will run.
If you are going to drop a Jspec in then a S5 would be a little easier. S5 Jspecs are easier to get a hold of and supposedly the S5 harnesses between NA and TII are easier to mix.

Now to add to the S4 TII or NA's.
Parts are more common and cheaper

When I got my S5 Jspec rebuilt I had to get a new front rotor and I could get a pair of S4 rotors for the price of one S5. I went with S4 because it is lower compression making it more boost friendly.

I passed up a chance to get an s5 tII for 500 bucks with only 50k original miles. Engine was locked but probably just carbon locked. Anyways after that everytime I go by the place that was selling it I get sick to my stomach.
