What to do to protect 90T2

Hi all,
I just recently bought a 90t2. It has a bonez downpipe, bonez high flow cat, and apexi N1 dual exhaust. It also has a Racing Beat fuel cut defender. It has 67,000 original miles and is boosting EXTREMELY Well. I haven't been really putting my foot into her constantly but it has gone up to about 9-10 psi a few times. I know from reading on here about alot of things to be done but I was wondering what all your opinions are on the order of parts to put on and what brands. I know first I really should get an EGT gauge to see if I am in fact leaning out but after that what should I get if I am??? More Fuel? S-AFC?? help guys and gals. I don't wanna go POP!
Thanks in advance,
Seth

Yes I do have an aftermarket boost gauge. I dont have a cone intake but I have a snorkel piping air up into the stock air box, sorta a ram air effect. If I get the bigger fuel pump will that take care of things or should I be getting prepared for the other mods as well?

Lemme rephrase the question...
How much boost should I be running with this setup? What is the safe level and when do I know its too much???

Hmmm... I can't answer the first part, because I've never watched a non-boost-controlled S5 go at it with those mods. I'd guesstimate about 10 lbs, since you don't have a cone intake. For about $45 in parts, you can build your own TID and cone intake. I'll be doing a writeup Real Soon Now. That'll make your car boost even quicker, and will add about 1.5-2 lbs at redline.

The thing is, I don't see any fuel mods. That is the FIRST thing you want to do. The stock fuel system is good for barely anything above stock. Get four 720s and an S-AFC, and get thee to a wide-band O2 sensor! EGTs are nice, but are not good tuning tools, unless you're building 5 identical cars - only "problem indicator" tools. Get it? You'll want to tune for 12:1s across the board.

The next thing you'll want to do is to go front-mount. The stock IC is good for no more than 10 lbs. (At some point in this cycle, you'll want to get a good boost controller - it'll help stabilize your boost) When you do this, it'll be in your best interests to upgrade your BOV, as well. Porsche makes an excellent unit for the 993-type 911 Turbo that costs about $40, flows very well, and holds something like 22 lbs of boost.

Once you get fuel and a front-mount, start thinking about upgrading your radiator. The stock unit is good, but not "250 hp to the wheels" good which is about what you'll be making.

Even with an FMIC and four 720s, I wouldn't run more than 10-12 lbs without seriously thinking about going to an upgraded turbo and standalone. Any more, and you're really overspinning the stock impeller. During this whole cycle, you'll also have to keep in mind things like tires, clutch, etc. I don't know where you live, but emissions are a pain, and removing them will greatly simplify your engine bay. It's a bit of an involved job, however. Again, a writeup is coming Real Soon Now.

Good luck!
Brandon

Thank you No7yet. That is a good plan of action. I dont think I will be getting anywhere near alot of those things atleast for awhile. I am in decent debt after buying the car now. At this point I'm just looking to take all necessary precautions against damage to my car. Im not looking for gains and or more horsepower/boost. With the mods that are already done to her I just want to make her super safe and reliable. THEN when she is all payed off I will go nuts with mods. I have to agree with Chance, in that all those things would be slighltly overkill and way out of my budget for now. Thank you once again though for the info. BTW, what is TID ??

Any other thoughts on what safety/reliability mods I need to do ASAP???

TID = turbo inlet duct.
you can run 10psi safely as long as you have the FCD

my 89 TII with 3"dp, 3" mp, cone filter and panspeed ecu runs 11psi all day long! once you go above 10 psi the stock turbo and intercooler heat up the intake charge more than they cool it

Seth, I think I know the car you bought - I was interested in it also. Congratulations it is a beauty!!
Don't beat it and certainly start with a bigger fuel pump. Good luck with, btw, if it is not asking too much, what did it end up costing?

yeah the walbro pump is a definate must if you are running 10psi. you dont really need 4 720cc injectors, only 2. you only really need to upgrade the secondary injectors, since those come on when you actualy do need the extra fuel(under boost) the primaries are always on and you shoudlnt have to upgrade those until you get into serious boost.
