Higher compression and the VDI intake manifold. The VDI manifold has been dynoed at 10 RWHP over the non VDI manifold on an 88 engine. And its not too hard to convert the 88 manifold to the VDI one. But I dont know exactly how to do it. Someone has a how-to online, but I dont know the link.

ECU is six times faster too. I don't know if the engine design is any different I just know it has stronger components in '89+

Also the 89-92s have 6.5 vs 5.5 PSI of boost.

If you want more HP, then just stepping up to a performance air intake, cold air box, perf. exhaust, and perf. catalytic converter will more than make up the 15PSI.

Just be sure to get an air/fuel & boost gague as you will be exceeding OEM boost levels.

i am working on doing theconversion on my car.right now,i'm waiting till i get my 89 lower intake,i was hoping to use my 87 with the 89 upper, but 1 bolt does not line up.i will keep you posted as i go along,i'm taking off all my emission crap, wich makes it somewhat easier.the tb needs modification,i think it will work fine thou,i have to grind a "nub" off the bottom.and i am using a electronic vdi actuationand [and pulling out my aux.ports].if you have any more info let me know!!also, the oil metering pump actuation rod has to be changed,i will figuere it out when i grt around to it.later.

It's only 14hp not 15hp.

Reasons they have more HP:

More compression, LIGHTER rotors (lower rotating mass so it revs faster, and redlines 1000 RPM higher) different trailing ignition timing (the trailing spark plug locations are slightly different- this is more emissions related though) a faster ECU, VDI intake.

Reasons they aren't actually noticeably faster:

They are CONSIDERABLY heavier.

Brad

88 Convertible (yes, even heavier...)
3" single exhaust w/cat
wired open 6-ports
Bonez intake
Howe Racing radiator
Perma-cool electric fan (do NOT get one of these, they suck!)
FD alternator
