what did i do to my t2 engine

Well last weekend i went up to bandimere (denver) to run my car for the first time. I had 3 inch turbo back, 3 inch tid, modded tb, walbro 255, 720 cc injectors, safc2, boost controller, intake, turbo xs bov, boost gauge., nitto 450r tires. Ok well the very first run the 60ft was ok(2.0) and first went great i hit 14-15 psi in 1st and 2nd but right after shifting into third gear I hear a loud pop and see smoke out the tail pipe. My intercooler hose had popped off. I pulleed over and noticed that about 6 vacuum lines included the bov line had also popped off. The car coasted through third and I only had a 14.00 at 93mph. That should have been a low 13 but anyways thats the least of my concerns. After that I got all the lines back on and tightened the clamps for the ic pipe. It started up and idled great. It drove fine. So i decided to go again. Well once I got to the line and held my rev at 4500 I could hear a very loud whirl like a supercharger. i took off and could still hear this sound but noticed I was making 0 boost according to the stock and aftermarket boost gauges. So I let off and coasted the whole way. I pulled over and checked everything again. And it has a perfect idle and starts up fine and is not smoking but it will not make boost. I drove it for about 40 mins back and never had any problems. But I fear I blew the motor. I since pulled the stock turbo manifold, ic and all piping because I put in my t04, manifold, external wg and fmic setup. I am just waiting on piping for the new setup. I guess tis is more of a rant than anything. I just wanted to get at least a few runs in before blowing up my engine.

If you think you blew the motor, why did you do a turbo swap and not ck the compression? Anyways I think its the turbo.

Sounds like your wastegate is permanently open if you arent building boosts

Even if it was stuck open it would still build boost. It would just take a while.

Is your wg ported or did you just set your boost that high? That TMIC is holding you back and the stock turbo probably isnt making any more power at 14 psi than 12psi with the TMIC. Just do a compression test first.

ok well I guess i will need to do a compression check. ill go through the archives and see what the process should be to check the compression, I am not sure how we do it on the rotaries. And ilike2eatricers, thats why I have my fmic now. I did not have a ported wg and was using a boost controler. It was pretty solid with very little boost creap for some reason. Im thinking the turbo cracked or something and Im not sure about the bov. Did anyone here when they blew their motor notice a loud whirling sound like a supercharged on a t2??

did you bother to even inspect your turbo after you yanked it off? it would probably save us the time of reading and trying to figure out what the problem was.

aren't you supposed to port the small s4 wastegate, after a couple modifications?

well id say your motor must be fine if it idles fine. a blown motor isnt gonna idle if its life depended on it. or at least not well AT ALL.

must be somekind of problem with your turbo

First, do a compression check and confirm the engine isn't blown.
If the engine cranks over and starts on the 3rd rotation and idles fine, I think the engine is still okay.

Second, it could be possible you blew a hose or cap and not fixed it yet.
The leak seals fine under pressure. but once under boost it opens.
Do you hear a LOUD wooooosh under boost?

Third, it is possible you killed your turbo...
Having a hose blow loose under heavy load can cause the turbo to overspin instantly.
It could've spun the bearings or cause other damage which you cannot see unless you tear the turbo apart.
Try and tear the turbo apart or get it inspected - I have a feeling the turbo is bad.

thank you reted. i did i visual inspection immediately but of course there is no way to tell without taking the turbo apart. It does make a really really loud whoosh once I get to where boost normally would be. It seems to be anything over 50 percent throttle above 2500 rpms that you hear this woosh sound like the turbo is making 20 psi but its not making any. I was thinking that one of the hoses was still not sealing right or the turbo was just spinning but not making boost. I had already planned to add my new turbo and Im completing that right now with the t04e, fmic, and all custom piping so if something was loose or the turbo bearings are shot then I will know I just wanted to get some helpful information. thanks for everyones help
