What compression is good??

im gonna have my 90 n/a tested and i was wondering what kind of results i shud have.

anything above 85 is decent. anything close will likely need a rebuild soon. do research first its not that hard of a question to find. good luck!

What is it being tested with, a piston tester or a rotary tester?

since when are there rotary compression tester... The compression tester I bought worked on both for rotary and piston motors. But thats just what i've been fiddleing with.

Since the first Mazda rotary cars in the late 70's and the first Suzuki RE5 motocycle.

There's a *mechanical* tester made for the RE5 ( makes squiggley marks on a roll of paper), and the Mazda engines have a digital compression tester to measure all three *faces/chambers* of each rotor.

Unlike a common piston engine compression tester which can't determine with Accuracy the compression of EACH face/chamber of a rotor.

A homemade one can be built for less than a tenth of the price of the Mazda one by reading the following thread and using your head: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...RESSION+TESTER

120 is perfect compression, I personally would get things prepped for a rebuild with any compression under 90 though that rebuild could be a few years off to never with an NA.

I called my local Mazda dealer and talked to their service manager about getting my '89 vert tested. I asked him if they used a special rotary compression tester or just a regular tester. He said he has never heard of a rotary compression tester and that they only use a regular tester that I can buy at Autozone.

Is there a write up on how to do the compression test?

I think you should run like hell form any dealer that says they have never heard of an rotary compresion tester. But I would run from most dealers...ahhaahha

There was actually a guy on here that posted a pic of the output from the rotary tester yesterday. Its basically a series of bars taht shows the output of the different faces.

And how there different numbers for a S5 NA and a S4 TII rotor in terms of compression.
