anything above 85 is decent. anything close will likely need a rebuild soon. do research first its not that hard of a question to find. good luck!

What is it being tested with, a piston tester or a rotary tester?

******since when are there rotary compression tester*********

Since the first Mazda rotary cars in the late 70's and the first Suzuki RE5 motocycle.

There's a *mechanical* tester made for the RE5 ( makes squiggley marks on a roll of paper), and the Mazda engines have a digital compression tester to measure all three *faces/chambers* of each rotor.

Unlike a common piston engine compression tester which can't determine with Accuracy the compression of EACH face/chamber of a rotor.

A homemade one can be built for less than a tenth of the price of the Mazda one by reading the following thread and using your head: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...RESSION+TESTER

An idea of what the factory one looks like is shown on the following site near the bottom of the page: http://www.mazdatrix.com/toolmisc.htm

120 is perfect compression, I personally would get things prepped for a rebuild with any compression under 90 though that rebuild could be a few years off to never with an NA.

I called my local Mazda dealer and talked to their service manager about getting my '89 vert tested. I asked him if they used a special rotary compression tester or just a regular tester. He said he has never heard of a rotary compression tester and that they only use a regular tester that I can buy at Autozone.

Is there a write up on how to do the compression test?

There was actually a guy on here that posted a pic of the output from the rotary tester yesterday. Its basically a series of bars taht shows the output of the different faces.

And how there different numbers for a S5 NA and a S4 TII rotor in terms of compression.
