What are the chances....?

Hey...it's been a couple years since I've been on here, and my GTUs has been in storage just as long.

I've been keeping it stored until I could get back to getting it running, but just never got the chance.

Recently, my storage place sold and the new owner wants to level it, so I had to move everything out.

In order to save money, I decided to keep my FC in my driveway until I move into a house in a month or so, then put it in the garage.

Since I've had it in the driveway, the wheels in my head have been turning on working on it mechanically and cosmetically, so I can drive it proudly again.

It's got a brand new (well just before it stopped running a couple years ago) paint job and the motor was rebuilt and fully bridgeported just before I bought it.

Although it will only take a little help from a friend to get it driving again, the interior is embarrassing. The previous owners took poor car of it cosmetically, but spent most of their money on the motor. (it was actually spray painted black when I bought it...ugh). So with a nice paint job and strong motor, I would like to feel good about the inside as well. It is the blue/grey interior.

What are the chances of finding this interior from a part-out or something in good condition?....and what is the typical cost for the full interior...carpet, seats, bins, etc?

Thanks

Pretty good man-

I've pieced together several interiors. Matter of fact one them was a blue interior, entirely spray painted black.

Keep an eye out on the for sale threads, ebay, & most importantly, craigslist/junkyards. In the past 3 months down here in clearwater, FL, 3 FC's have gone thru the u-pull-it yards that were S5 w/ full black interior. A friend of mine also bought a GTUs & stripped it down to become a drift car, & I got ahold of his old interior. So, just be patient & keep an eye out & you'll find it. But do remember, the longer time goes on the harder it'll be to find parts.

I see a huge differnece in the "ease" of interior bit collecting between FB & FC.. It's only a matter of time until the FCs are just as rare, & then even more rare

Yeah, if you coat the interior pieces with SEM Landau Black (after aggressive cleaning with TSP) you'll be amazed how fresh and new even 20+ year old plastic will look. Personally I find the SEM (targeted for pros) more OEM looking than the Duplicolor (marketed to consumers) but either way the results will be amazing.

And be sure to check with Mazdatrix and Malloy Mazda because many of the interior parts are still available.

I've noticed a lot of threads on painting interiors...and back when I bought my GTUs, I really wanted an all black interior

Thought it would look great with my Noble White paint job...

But because of the rarity of the GTUs, I wanted to keep it as original as possible so it has a greater value as years go by...

Of coarse it has a bridge port and a Turbo II hood...so I'm not sure how much difference it would make...

What do you guys think?

...look for original blue/grey interior in good condition to keep it looking original...or go all black because it doesn't matter anyway?

most of the dirt and grime is in the floor and headliner.

get a shampooer with an upholstery attachment and go to town on the interior. i have a hoover and it's been great for like 10 years and was about a hundred bucks brand new.

the carpet may be faded but it still should look nicer when clean of the 25 years of crap it's been subjected to. seats usually are ripped, not much you can do about that even finding replacements, it's hard to find good stock seats. next is usually the center console and stereo surround, just replace them or re-cover them. if the dash is faded or cracked, a dash cover works... unless you're **** about it then finding one without broken tabs will be a new chore, then installing it without breaking that brittle plastic, good luck.

I'll give it a shot...is there any suggested stain remover products for spot cleaning?

Also I don't have the panels, ceiling, or bin covers....I haven't actually looked around to see what's all missing in a while, but I know I'm missing those parts

So I went and looked at my interior again to see everything I needed...

The carpet is screwed...some of it is gone all the way to the metal...as are the seats

I'm missing a few trim pieces, like the ceiling, front side panels, trim around center light thing, etc.

The door panels are pretty good, as well as the center console, dash, etc.

So some need a little cleaning...some need replacing...and some are completely missing...

well i guess not, shampooing won't grow new hair on the carpet, well maybe if you just spray it and don't vacuum it up and leave it for another year. then you will have green interior!

You've chosen a tough path, amigo.

The stock seats (note the plural because I'm referring to the pair) are difficult to replace, so there aren't as many take-outs as some other models. The ones remaining almost invariably show wear, particularly on the drivers outside bolster.

Finding a good pair-especially in black- is a somewhat Grail-like experience.

ok....I'll keep you in mind when I decide to move forward with the seats...

Luckily, for the seats, I can just get a pair of seat covers for now and focus on the other parts that can't just be covered.

I need to look into full carpeting...ceiling...and front, side panels...and a couple trim pieces around the dash

Guess I'll keep my eyes open in the Classifieds for the parts, but what's the consensus on carpet?

Buy new...or from a part-out?

Buy it new... but be prepared for some work. It isn't as plug and play as the companies make it out to be.

i'd look at the prices of plastic trim new, its not that expensive, and its new.

carpet i'd buy good used, new will be aftermarket and probably be the wrong color, cut and fiber

I've lost all of my Mazda parts websites...where is a good inexpensive place to get the plastics? Mazdatrix?

Atkins has a lot of the plastic pieces. But I heard they were a bad business - about 8 years ago

Just kidding. Atkins is awesome!
