what in the bloody screaming hell is the VDI?
alright guys i realize that this is probably a pretty stupid question from someone who is a competent mechanic but i cant find it anywhere. what the hell is a vdi and what does it do?
i ask this bc i am in the middle of fabbing up some kind of aux port actuation since the guy i got my car from was a frikin MORON and among other things just kinda left the split air pipe hanging there. so im using the air pump to open my aux ports and when browsing this forum i keep coming across the term VDI and i dont know what it is\cant find it in the fsm.
anyway thanx for ur help

VDI, is the virtual dynamic intake. It is the system that opens up the 5th and 6th ports. (computer actuated) Cars made from 89 to 91 had it. The earlier S4 models used backpressure from the exhaust to open the ports. So it does not have VDI

And it opens the varaible dynamic intake, not the auxilary ports.
It is kind ahard to describe, but changes the air flow pattern at higher rpms for extra power.

The VDI is the varible dynamic intake. It changes the length of the intake runners based on the engine speed to smooth the torque curve and increase top end.
The 5th/6th ports are a different system. They increase the rotor intake volume and timing based on engine speed.
However you are correct that the air pump and computer control actuates the systems on the series 5 cars.
