went and saw an FC but ran funny

So i went and saw an 87 fc (thinking of buying) white with faded paint no rust clean body has 170k on it asking 2400
car seemed to idle poorly kinda like jump up and down a little and it seemed to not have much power at all threw the band but the clutch pedal didn;t hit till the top and when it did it seem jerk the car around!

also i heard some chunking i think from some where around me of behide but when i looked under it i didn;t seen any worn out bushings

so i'm guessing the clutch is bad and maybe a warped flywheel?
and was slipping when i got on it

or the motor is not tunes and or shoot
I really don;t know f/c i had a 79 for a year and it seem to run better

so any help here would be great

tell you like this, if it has 170k and hasnt had a rebuild then there should be no way you pay the guy 2400. Id personaly say no more then 1.3k, because if it hasnt had a rebuild, then it WILL need one soon. and you should know a rebuild cost atleast 1k(thats if you do it yourself) But what model is the car? Ask the owner if you can get a tune up /pay for a tune up before you make up your mind. Then tell him that it needs a rebuild and see if you can get them to drop the price.

Could just be an adjustment of the peddle is needed for smoother engagment. I have mine set pretty high at the moment, so I'll have to tune it down later.

Probably the differential. On a car with that many miles you may need a rebuild kit. I think you can order one from mazda or somethin' for around 400 for a complete build. I forget the guys name though.

Could be a bad clutch, or he's got the peddle so tight that the clutch hasn't fully engaged. Definatly sounds like the guy may need to make some adjustments/tune it a little bit.
or the motor is not tunes and or shoot

mmm... Ask the owner if he's willing to tune it up on his dime. Or bring it to a mechanic to give it a once over. Usually if you tell 'em you're thinking of buying it and you'd like them to go over it they'll usually do it for 50-75. and it's good assurance knowing exactly what's wrong with the car. However, not all mechanics have worked on a rotary. so... call around a little bit, but definatly talk the guy down from his asking price. I bought my first 7 for 1800 and it was in almost perfect condition (the hood wasn't the same color).

Ha I think I got you All Beat

This Is going To kill you guys that have been looking for the RIGHT ONE!!

One random day i look in the news paper just to see whats forsale and see a Add that reads

1986 Mazda RX-7 needs motor 500$obo

So I go and look at it and looking at it its ruff, But the body on it is Clean NO rust What so ever but needs a paint job bad, ( wify wanted a yellow sports car so the owner took it to CrapCO and had it painted and it sat in the sun for 6-9 month at the mazda dealer and Faded Bad). just looking at the breaks you could tell it has been sitting for awile. So the Owner shows up and said yup it got 80,000Miles on it, and the dealer told me the motors blown Because the car keeps going throw Cats like ever 2 months Ive had to put 6 cats on it already.

So I asked the Guy does it run He said" Yeah Runs fine." So I take it for a test drive around the parking lot the Brakes where some what not there But the Car Ran Perfict.

Long Story Short I said Yup Its blown alright and talked him Down to 400$ Put air in the tires and Drove it home and hit 120 on the Eway haha I bought it on the spot. I did a Brake Overhall and New sway bars the next week.

Now finaly at 160000 Miles The coolant seals went on it and Ever Mile I Drove it I beat The living **** out of it!! Mind you it still Ran Great Just didnt keep Coolant in the motor at all and smoked A lot

BTW its A GTU a stripped down GTU no P.S., No P.W. and power locls, no sun roof, didnt even have storage bins in back, Mint Gray Interior!!
Now its Getting a LS1!!

-Moral Of this Is my 400$ Rx-7 with 80,000 miles was a cherry car!!

Compression test it, i bet it tests like crap.

Needs:
TPS adjustment/replacement
Vacuum lines and intake gaskets
clutch pedal adjustment
Front differential mount
Probably needs oil pan gasket
check to see if it has hot start issues, definately a sign of low compression/leaking injectors
Probably has sloppy shifter

See about:
Transmission oil ever changed?
What kind of engine oil is used?
Regularity of oil changes?
Belt and coolant hose leakage
Oil cooler line leakage
Condition of shocks, is the alignment straight
How much life left in the brakes
Does it smoke at all besides a slight amount at startup?

There is no way the car is worth $2400, tell him the only way anyway he's gonna' sell it for that much is if some idiot that loves initial D sees it and thinks its worth that.

That's no exaggeration. Skip it. It'll cost you the budget of a 3rd world nation to fix. I'd buy it for $400, then strip it down and sell the good parts for a small profit.

Though $2400 is actually now a low price for an RX-7 with 170k on it. IF it's in excellent condition.

"car seemed to idle poorly kinda like jump up and down a little"

did it feel like the car was "bucking"? Mine did that. It had no compression on two sides of one rotor, and needed a rebuild and a new rotor housing. That cost me $3k+, though I didn't do the work myself.

Anyhow, sounds like it needs a rebuild.

wait for the right fc. It took me around a year (to get the money) and 2 months to find the right one...its out there trust me, you'l know its yours when you drive it, something will just click. I picked my 1988 GTU up for 3000, it has original everything and is in immaculate condition. It still has the tie downs too!

I was looking for mine for a year and it was a long year to. I drove by a used car lot and saw a vary nice black fc so I slamed on the brakes and turned in the lot. no rust on it what so ever still had the phone dials on it to!. so I went and asked the guy how much and what is the story behind it. he says an old lady was driving it and wanted something with more space lol. it was an 88 and only had 91,xxx miles and was brillent black was the base model 5 speed no power any thing the inside was perfect no rips or tears nothing the only problem was that it was killing the battery evary time you whould turn off the car. so I came on here and posted some pics and thanks to ice mark pointed out there was no main relay. and found out that going through two jumper wires was 120 amps! so I asked a local parts store how much one was going to cost they said $200 I found one on ebay for $16 so I went back and asked the guy how much thinking that it was going to be to much for me he said $2000 and I talked him down to $1500. drove it home the next day with the help of a jump start. the main relay came the next day and started the car and fell in love with my 7 and havent looked back sence!
