Unhappy Weird Sound....

For the past week now I have been hearing a weird sound that seems to be coming from my shifter area. It starts when I step on the gas and gets louder as I rev up to just under 4000 and then it kind of dies off but I can still barley hear it. I called Mazda but I don’t really want to bring it in to them.

Any thoughts ?

Check to make sure that the nut that is below your shifter **** is good and tight. Mine came loose once and it was very loud, sounded like a really pissed off hornet was in my car

Does the whine go away with the clutch in? At idle how is the whine? down the road how is the whine? going down the road, with the clutch in, and reving, how does the whine sound? in gear, out of gear, ect ect. You are way to broad, do all of this and come back to us. Im SURE we can pin point it after that. U joints? hhmm.. i wouldnt think so, but go under the car and chec them i fyou want. My guess is pilot bearing, or throw-out bearing. Or fluid level in the trans, check that too. You could just be hearing your trans whine due to low or old fluid. I can go on forever.....

well i got new trans fluid about 3 weeks ago and nothing sems to be leaking. i noticed this morning that when i started my car with the clutch in it sounded normal and then i let the clutch it sounded like somethig was whining but it didnt seem to come from the shifer area. Could that sound be the throw-out bearing???

the whining sound that i have been hearing from the shifter area doesnt happen when i push in the clutch and rev up the engine up when i am going 50. the sound comes back when i am driving in gear and start to gas it.

Hhhmm.. Im not sure man. I would say it has to be clutch pressure regulated for it to go away with the clutch in. That would eliminate it being hte pilot bearing and more likly the throw-out. BUT, T/O bearings usually sound like a chirp chirp sound, but i guess they could be whining. If its the T/O bearing, it wont hurt a thing (it could possibly put extra wear on the clutch pressure plate teeth, but thats not too big of a deal), just get on your nerves. If it were me, i would get a new T/O and pilot bearing and install them just to be safe. While you are down there, examine all the clutch components and check the wear and replace the parts as needed. Try to find out which part of the trans it is coming from. Thats about all i can say with the information, anyone else wanna add to this or have any other suggestions?

do you have coins on the center console? them coins could make a nasty sound too if your car rumbles and they're tapping on the console plastic...just a thought (my .02 cents)

i just changed my shifter bushings and the lower shifter boot. I name of the boot might be called something else but its the one that is bolted down with the 3 bolts. the old shifter boot was in rough shape. After about $35 spent, the sound is prety much gone. I think it was the sound from the gear box or something that was making the noise.

oh yah, it only took about 35 min to fix.
